After a very long day Bear is home from his surgery. He bounced into the lobby ready to go. I knew ahead of time to ask for a cone since he loves to lick himself. Sure enough as soon as I took it off tonight he tried to lick his incision. He is the same energetic dog he was yesterday. I can't believe how alert and active he is. The poor guy is so hungry and thirsty but the vet told me not to give him any food or water until tomorrow morning. Not sure how well that will work out.

He HATES his cone collar and is running into everything. I can't imagine doing this for the next ten days. I'm going to need a vacation after this is all said and done.

I just put it on Toby, and he left it alone. He had a more complicated surgery (one undescended testicle) and was really not feeling himself for a couple of days. He never tried to get at his stitches, at least while I was watching, and yet when we took him back in, all but one were pulled out. I think if they want to get at the stitches, they will, especially at night.

I tried the t-shirt but he just moved it out of the way. How did you keep the area covered?

We tried the cone very briefly, and then opted for something else. There are pictures on my page - we used a men's muscle shirt put on backwards - hind legs through the arm holes, tail through the neck. I tied it on top. We did have to take it off every time we took him out to "pee", and then put it back on, but at least he was comfortable, could fit in his crate, and wasn't banging into things. Toby is timid as well, and the cone was freaking him out. :)

Well after a very LONG night I am off to the store to get benadryl to calm my wild and crazy boy down and then head over to the vet's for a different cone. Bear being a smart Doodle learned to lick his incision even with the cone on. I called the vet this morning and they recommended the benadryl to hopefully calm him down a bit. He's been jumping and running all over and nothing can stop him. They are going to try to fit him with a larger cone that will hopefully stop the obsessive licking.

He was sooooooooo happy to eat and drink this morning. Bear loves his water bowl so it was pure torture for him last night without it. He'd drink a lake dry if I let him.

I can't wait for this mess to be over!

When Eddie needed a cone, he was so scared of it that he spent 24 hours leaping backwards to get away from it. He's not the bravest doodle around. I showed up at the vets the next day with bags under my eyes to get tranquilizers for him. It was truly pathetic!!

He just looks so cute! As I told you, Thomas gets "done" on Friday morning, but our vet insists on keeping them overnight to monitor their vital signs, water intake etc, mostly because of the aenesthetic. Apparantly the operation only takes about 10 minutes. I'll bet that my dog will find a way to rip off the cone.

I took our cone off after only a few times. She was so sad with it on and I couldn't imagine leaving her for an extended period of time, unable to drink water or anything. Good luck!

OMG! I could not help but chuckle at your post (sorry!). I just took Phoebe to the vet today for her rabies shot and to make the appointment for her spaying which will be on June 2nd. Call me crazy--or naive--but I thought the cone was worn for the first few days only. Imagine my surprise when I was told otherwise. Phoebe is so energetic and crazy sometimes. I have no clue how I am going to keep her calm plus, add four children to the mix, and I am going to have some serious issues ahead. Oh, that cone! Sometimes I think I am more worried about that in and out of the crate than the actual surgery itself. I hope that Bear heals quickly and without issue. Let me know if you have any suggestions for me! Take care and good luck.
