My surgery came through miraculously. It was a lower back lumbar L-4/L-5 fusion with lots of other descriptive words which only my wife, a retired nurse, understands.

My doctor, Choll Kim, MD, who is in charge of the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Center at Alvarado Hospital did a wonderful job. I had surgery on the afternoon of May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) and I was out of bed walking the next morning and was released from the hospital at 3 PM on May 6th; 24 hours after surgery.

Dr. Kim says that there are patients who fly from the East Coast so he can perform surgery here in San Diego and the Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Wing of the hospital has a wonderful setup. Each room is private and has both a hospital bed and a recliner couch which converts to a bed and allows a loved one to stay with the patient at no extra cost,. There are even a pair of flat screen T.V.'s in the room. A large one which accommodates both the person on the couch and the patient sitting up in bed. If the patient cannot sit up; there is a smaller flat screen monitor on an articulating arm which can be adjusted to any spot, over or near the bed, where it would be comfortable for the patient to watch. This would be particularly handy for a patient after surgery which would require recovery in a reclined position.

My wife says that in 30 years of nursing, she has never seen smaller incisions for that degree of surgery or a neater wound area. Of course, I am in some pain but, nothing that oral medications cannot manage. Hopefully none of you will need this type of surgery but, if you do - minimally invasive is the way to go and Alvarado is the place to have it done by Dr. Kim Choll. By the way, Dr. Choll antidipates that I will be walking a mile a day within a month.

Thanks for all the good wishes. I appreciate your taking the time to post. I am doing quite well and up to walking about a half mile a day. I sometimes think that the recovery is slow until I reflect back on the previous week and realize that everything is going as planned and hoped.
