Ginger is being spayed next week and she will come home with the dreaded "Cone of Shame"

How does one fit the dog, through the crate opening, or for that matter, in the crate with such a fashion accessory?

These are the things I think about, while I am wide awake at 3:00AM.

Thanks for any advice

Dex had knee surgery 8 weeks ago.  He had to be in a cone for 2 weeks.  We took the cone off before he exited the crate and only put the cone one once he was back in it.  It was sad because he would try to sit up with it on and would smack the cone into everything.

If you are able to supervise your doodle, you may be able to do a tee shirt or shorts to cover the incision rather than a cone.  We had no such options for a knee.

Poor Dexter!  What a good doodle sport!

He looks very cute...thanks
Bodi did not fit in the crate with the cone on.  We left him blocked into one large room during the day and hoped for the best.  I was not a member of DK at that point, so I didn't know about t-shirts, etc.  When we were with him, we took the cone off!  He also "needed" it off to go potty.  He couldn't sniff the ground with it on, so he couldn't find a good spot!!  You will all be relieved when this is over and you will laugh about it!  Really!
People have mentioned T-shirts.  What is this and where/wlhat size...?
I'm sorry I have no experience with the "cone" but I sure can relate to the 3am issue....my husband hates those 3am discussions I always have :-)

Quincy could not fit in his crate and turn around with his cone on, it was at this point he started sleeping in our bedroom. I kept the cone off as much as I could as he kept hooking it on the stairs and banging into everything. There is a soft cone you can get that looks a lot more comfortable. It's available on Amazon.com or if you are crafty you could even make your own.

there are several different types of cones you could try - maybe take Ginger into the store before surgery to test them out

I tried a child's short sleeve t-shirt.  Put his tail through the head hold and his back legs through the arm hole.  Gav was more interested in taking it off though and did better with the cone.  The first day he was pretty pathetic bumping into things but got the hang of it after a while.
I used the soft cone and some times added the inflatable collar. Echo too had surgery (not nearly as serious as Dex) and had to wear the cone for 2 weeks. The soft collar allowed him to get comfortable and it didn't make as big of a racket when he adjusted inside his kennel.
Our vet said if she woke up scratching she's put the cone on but if she left it alone at first then she probably wouldn't need the cone and she was right. I think I told her maybe 3 times to leave it and redirected her and she caught on quickly. I would've tried the T shirt first anyway before getting a cone. So maybe you can wait and see.
KoKo was spayed about  month ago, wore the cone for almost two weeks until she got it off herself.  Her philosophy - if it doesn't go through a space just PLOW ON THROUGH.  She did get stuck in a couple of places like under the end table, one of her favorite places to snooze.  The cone to her was just another something in her life.  Maggie was more afraid of the fact that KoKo was wearing it.  She's my little wimpy doodle. KoKo is fearless.
