I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

I have a question... don't know if it has been addressed or not, but did a search and didn't see anything, but if there is one, please guide me to it!

We have a small water fountain in our yard, we want to keep it clean with something that won't be harmful to Kashmir if she happen to drink it. Although she really never pays any attention to the fountain, we are trying to keep on the safe side. Thanks for any comments!!

Does anyone have a spicy hot pickle recipe?

Thank you all for your input.  I've continued our question to the discussion here in the Garden Group: The Tree and The Bricks.

See my response to RJ's discussion. The roots of trees extend as far out as the leaf canopy!  It would take a while but soon enough you'll have a lot of firewood.

I'm not sure how far from the trunk is safe; the tree's root ball usually extends quite a distance from the circumference of the trunk, but I don't know if a lot of dirt over any part of the root ball is a problem. I would allow a space of several feet in all directions from the trunk.

Karen, how far out from the trunk could you increase the level of dirt?  Or is it something that shouldn't be done at all?

F.J., it will kill the tree. Even a small mound of dirt at the base of the tree (often called "volcanoes" because of the shape) can kill the tree. You don't want any dirt above ground level around the base of the tree.

Ok here is my question . Can i build a retaining wall around a maple tree and fill it with dirt about 2 feet deep ? it would mean that the tree trunk would also be covered 2 feet with dirt . I thought i remember some one saying that this will kill the tree

Being quicker then the birds is not always easy.  Luckily there is enough for both of us.
