Garden Group

I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

Here in zone 7 (either A or B depending whose map you read) we can usually put out annuals around tax day and not worry about frost.  Oh well.

does that mean we will eventually be sunbathing on Christmas in the Northeast? haha. It's over my head for sure!

But perhaps global warming overall is why the've moved up the dates.

We always planted annuals around Mothers Day and impatiens closer to Memorial Day growing up in Lancaster Co PA. In Maryland now, I can plant a couple of weeks earlier than that - but at this rate, they'll be planting annuals in Maine on the 4th of July! :) So what were they saying about Global Warming?

Thanks for the warning! When I was younger my dad always said tender plants should go out after Memorial Day. Now it's May 15th but it can be too early in NJ!

yep, I am pulling out the plastic sheets to cover my beds as we speak.  Containers are coming in.

WARNING - To all Zone 7A and lower number Zones - Dangerously low night temperatures for annuals now until May 10! Our Spring is a "late bloomer" this year by a week or so. My annuals are in flats inside the house until next week. Petunias outside are OK. This also means impatiens are 2 weeks out.

And mulch helps retain moisture too. There have been books written on  this including the long out of print one by "the mother of mulch", Ruth Stout. She gardened mainly by pouring on tons of mulch into her 90's.

@Allyson, definitely go with mulch as it will help control weeds but will also slowly breakdown and improve the soil.

Allyson, some mulch or stones in the beds will help keep down the weed growth, too.
