Garden Group

I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

Rose of Sharons grow quickly, flower all summer and make attractive hedging. I planted a few on one side of my yard many years ago and they form a pretty privacy fence all summer. They can be trimmed like hedges and when the "babies" come up from the seeds and are about 3-4" tall, just yank them out by hand, make a little hole somewhere else and they create more hedge. If you start out with just a few, within 2-3 years, you will have it filled in and now I just yank them and throw them out, I have so many. It makes the yard look very tropical all summer as they are in the hibiscus family. They come in white, pink, and purple and if you get all the colors, the bees pollinate them into different shades. I'll take a pic in July to show you how pretty it looks.

I'm in the Chicago area and have a big perennial bed and lots of very old flowering shrubs that I inherited from a previous owner...many, many owners ago. It had all been badly neglected for a long time. I've also been working on making the completely empty, bare backyard halfway attractive, and get some privacy, since I live on a corner.
I gardened a lot when my daughter was young, but haven't worked at it much for a long time. Right now, evergreens are my biggest challenge. And last year we had Japanese beetles like crazy.
I do not care at all about grass as long as there is some.
