I am grateful to find this group. I am currently in the process of trying to make my Doodle as chemical free as possible. I am struggling with finding a heart worm  and heart guard medication for Jack. I have him on Flea treats. He has been on Revolution and got a tick. He was on Frontline plus and had a few fleas.... I don't want him infested with fleas, I just bought Advantix for him but I can't seem to find the courage to put it on him. I read the horrible side effects of how it can burn him and cause so much irritation. He is only 11 pounds I don't want to hurt him. I read some good ideas on him. For now he is on a vacation from flea medications and I am going to keep giving him heart worm medication because I just don't know what to do.

I found an article on "safe toys" for our doodles. Thought you might find it interesting since it is the time of year for buying!! I checked the toys I have already purchased for Tara and of course they are all made in China!! UGH!!

I agree with you about the difficulty of choosing natural vs chemical. I live in Oregon too and I am in a low risk area relatively speaking. Although I know several people here whose dogs have encountered heartworm problems. I don't want to put Tara at risk either way. Juggling the short term possibly life threatening heartworm issues with the long term "who knows what" of giving the chemicals on a regular basis is difficult.

I think you are wise to use the chems seasonally so her system can rest and detox.

As you, we are not vaccinating beyond the first rounds of puppy shots. (Accept rabies-haven't figured out how to get past that one yet). We tested titers this year (one year after puppy shots) and they were high. Do you have her titers test annually?

Yes, there are getting to be a lot of choices anymore but the trick is sorting through it all to find what actually works!! :>)

I am familiar with the nosode for heartworm but I have as yet been unable to find any research or documented evidence of its effectiveness with preventing heartworm infestations. Do you have information about this? My vet offers it but I haven't really felt comfortable using it due to lack of data.

I have not given black walnut to Tara but do use it for my cat from time to time for other parasites. How do you dose with it for heartworm prevention and how long have you been using it?

This HWF is used as a preventative and also a treatment apparently. We have been using it for a few months now but would like to know of other's experience with it too.

The HWF product requires 1 dose twice a day for a week every month.

Off subject- Could you please tell me how to add a link to to a discussion?

I am glad to see this group on DK! It is nice to know there are others making the effort to raise their doodles naturally. I'm wondering if any of you have experience with a product by the name of HWF (Heart Worm Formula) by Amber Technology? Their research (although not done by an outside entity) appears impressive if somewhat limited. Anyone using it?

Thank you for creating this group! I lived pretty natural and as organic as possible. Zoe and Shea both eat an al natural/holistic blend of kibble with no corn/filler/byproducts, etc just chiken and fish.....they don't see to like the lamb or venison nless its in treat form from their vet[go figure]. They also eat what we prepare for meals as well. They don't get a whole plate full, but they get plenty. They love when I am preparing salads as the vegetables might snap and fly while I am chopping fast and the scurry around to get pieces. I make all their homemade treat.

I've been working on a website for my company that sells all natural and orgainc products for dogs. So please, I'd love to hear about any produts you use. I'm really loving this flea free stuff you are talking about. Going across the bridge to see if I can find it.

Bronwen, I posted this in July 2009 (see below). I have continuously used flea free since I brought Maggie home any have never seen a flea or tick on her. I like that this is natural product.

I have used flea free since November of last year. I put it on Maggie's food in lieu of the water since I toss out dirty water. She has never had ticks or fleas (I'm knocking on wood as I write this) and I have taken her for walks in fields and areas where there are ticks. Maggie is only 19 lbs (she's a mini) and I'm just now finishing the 8 oz bottle from November! I also purchased the all natural spray from Healthy Food for Pets website. I use it on both of us. I have been pleased with the results of both thus far. I didn't want to have to put chemicals on Mags either.

I am currently using Frontline Plus for a flea medication, but I've heard horror stories about it and my doodle Tyson hates it. Does anyone have any suggestions for some other options for flea and tick preventative that might work well?

Hi Nancy
I think I would just get a grainfree kibble if you can and do that for the rest of the trip. Give them a 24 hour break between foods. I would give the girls some aloe juice too if you can. Even if you find the raw in a pet store, it will be different than what the girls are used to, so might not help the situation. Hope you are having a good time.

Does anyone know of a pet store in either Butte or Missoula, Montana or Couer de laine Idaho that sells raw food? I am travelling and have been faking it with grocery store meat and a veggie mix resulting in runny poops. I would love to create a raw food directory on here... any suggestions?
