Christina: Awesome! Make sure you see the paperwork! You will also want her seen by YOUR Vet ASAP when you get her home.

Nancy: thank you for your input. The breeder has agreed to get her checked by her vet before we get her.

Christina, the first thing that comes to my mind is the tearing that poodles are often prone to which does not go away.  When we were camping last year, we met a darling little doodle who was a miserable dog - constant and severe tearing. Her owners HAD spent a lot of money trying to help her and nothing had worked.  This is not to scare you, but to put the other side on your inquiry.  Personally, I would be very leery of a breeder who first told me that it was because she was teething and then changed her story to being allergic to the cedar chips, which, if true, does not bode well for the pup's future with allergies.  I would do a bit more checking up on your breeder.

Christina: if she does eye testing, then it's probably safe to say it covers PRA. BUT, you need to ask to SEE the results and ask for copies.

Thanks Laura!

I hope so too! Definitely worth having a vet check it out to be sure. Good luck with the little one!

Debb: thank you for your input. I will have the tear ducts looked at. Several of the pups in the litter had this and the more I read the more common this kind of thing seems. We just want to know what we are in for, it's a big expense to get a pup! Thanks:)

Laura: good insight to know about the poodle! I hope it's just that and nothing serious. Thanks

Rosemary: thank you for putting thought into this:) The breeder does eye testing, do you think it covers progressive retinal atrophy? The breeder did also mention allergy to the cedar chips in the box. I have asked her to have her vet look at it this week when she goes in for another shot. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge!
Comment by Debb, Lucy & Oscar on November 9, 2014 at 8:00pm

Christina: Oscar came home (at 8 weeks) with quite runny eyes. It was a dark, sticky-hard material. It wouldn't come off without first being moistened with water to soften up a bit. Lucy had had conjunctivitis once so we knew that wasn't what his was. Our vet said his tear ducts were probably plugged, and that he might grow out of it as he matured. During his neuter procedure he flushed Oscar's tear ducts. He later told me his tear ducts were entirely plugged, and they became plugged again very quickly. Over the following 1-1/2 yrs Oscar's eyes have gotten considerably better, but he still gets 'eye boogers', as you call them, but they don't run down his face any longer. I just clean them off every day with a wet cloth.
