Hi Laura - The recipe I make is 5kg pet meat, 2 cups natural bran, 3 cups grated raw veg (but not peas, corn or onion), 2 cups cottage cheese or natural yoghurt and 3 cups cooked brown rice or small pasta. I just mix it like a meatloaf and then divide. The recipe says to add a vitamin supplement but I figure the kibble does that (they have Eagle Pack Holistic biscuits) The romps sound good so let me know when you are getting together and I'll see how we are going (it is a bit of a drive from here!!)

Hi Sam, so what's the recipe?? I think Ruby is allergic to all grains, so she's low carb with the exception of banana chips and other fruits. We're in Sydney and often get together with some other Sydney and surrounding area doodles if you're interested!

Hi everyone - We have just signed up to this group, We live on the Central Coast, NSW, Australia. I have two doodles that have both been raw fed from the day we got them. The breeder actually recommended that we conitinued with it. She gave us a recipe that I make in a big batch every week or so (it is based on 5kg meat) and then I freeze it in day size bags and defrost everyday. I top it up with a cup of kibble (which I figure gives them any vitamins that my food may be lacking????). They also have a chicken wing each every morning. Ollie is 2 years old and Murphy is 1.
It has been good reading through the past comments.......

Tomatoes for Doodles. Lucy, I stopped by our vet's office to weigh Jamaica this afternoon ~ I remembered what you said about Ozzie gaining weight when you first started him on a raw diet. He thought she could stand to lose a few pounds, and she is now down 2 pounds ~ just a few more to go.

I also asked them about feeding dogs [ripe] tomatoes, and they said that in moderation, that would be fine. Conventional wisdom seems to say it is the leaves and stems are the bad part of the tomato.

Yes, I was just thinking about that today since Ozzie gets bits of cheese sticks for training treats (high value!). I will research hyperlipidemia in dogs!

Then I guess that was her first and last tomato. I also Googled it, and found a site that said all dairy products, including cheese, was bad for dogs.....

Good question. Here is what I found by Googling:

tomatoes can be fatal to dogs Tomatoes (plant and fruit) contain tomatine, an alkaloid related to solanine. As the fruit ripens, the tomatine is metabolized. Therefore, ripe tomatoes are less likely to be problematic for animals. Clinical signs of poisoning include lethargy, drooling, difficulty breathing, colic, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, widely-dilated pupils, paralysis, cardiac effects, central nervous system signs (e.g., ataxia, muscle weakness, tremors, seizures), resulting from cholinesterase inhibition, coma and death. (This information comes from veterinarians, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.) (All parts of the plant except the tomato itself are poisonous to humans, although some people are sensitive to the ripe fruit also.)

Tomatoes also contain atropine, which can cause dilated pupils, tremors, and heart arrhythmias. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, with less in unripe (green) tomatoes, and even less in ripe (red) tomatoes.

I would find something else to feed, since one doesn't know how their doggie will react.

Does/has anyone fed their Doodle tomatoes? I also posted this on the Food Group, as I'm sure a lot of you check in on both groups. I was making salsa the other day and gave Jamaica bit of tomato. I was very surprised at how much she liked it ~ not being a dog who will eat any and everything.

As long as she seems OK, I wouldn't worry. However the problem with those bones is that they splinter as they eat them and sometimes can cause intestinal performations or blockages-at least that is what I have heard. Even if Ozzie would, I don't think I would let him eat a whole knuckle/femur bone. I think Lew's advice about taking them away once the meat has been consumed is reasonable. I would err on the side of caution.

Angus is 29 pounds/six months and will chew on an inch and a half beef neck bone for hours. I let him gnaw on it for a day or so, untill it gets hard (and STINKS!). I don't know how we would have gotten through the last six moths without them! Haven't seen knuckle bones in the stores in Virginia. Heading back to Mexico in a week, so we'll see what they have there.
