I think this is where I am confused, Lucy. Jamaica ate THE WHOLE THING. It's now been over 48 hours and she not only seems fine, I would rather suspect she would love another one! Your'e right, she may be 65 pounds, but I do not consider her a "big" dog.
Anyone else?

Vicky, to me large dogs means mastiff, newfie, even pits with powerful jaws. We use the "large beef ribs" that she mentions. Notice she qualifies all recommendation with "large dogs." I don't think that either Ozzie or Jammers fits that category. I think you have to use your own judgement on this If she enjoyed the bone and did not consume it, maybe you can monitor the chewing to be sure she doesn't harm herself or splinter it. When Ozzie eats pork ribs I always take away the bones when they start to splinter. He has usually finished the meat by that time anyway.

Bones. I feel I need a little clarification. I have grown up believing knuckle bones were good for dogs ~ I recently gave Jamaica one and she LOVED it, but I know some of you disagree. I came across this from Lew Olson's site:

"Recreational bones can help keep the teeth clean, avoid gum disease, and provide a great deal of chewing pleasure and exercise. I like to give large beef ribs, and take them away once all the meat has been removed, but these bones may be consumed by larger dogs and more aggressive chewers. Knuckle bones are good recreational bones, especially for large dogs. Marrow bones are OK but can be a problem if dogs get them between their molars and crunch down, as they are very hard and can cause broken teeth. The marrow is also very rich and may cause diarrhea (you can scoop some of it out with a spoon before feeding to help). Bones get harder as they dry out, so to avoid problems with broken teeth, it's better to take the bones away after a reasonable amount of time (anything from a few hours to a day or two). Bones should always be fed raw, as cooked bones become hard and brittle, which can be dangerous if consumed."

I wish Ruby followed me around for food-- she's just like my kids, not motivated in food! Wish I could same the same. Vicky, the only thing with veggies, fruit, and beans are that I'd watch the poo situation-- too much of any of those could cause an explosion if you know what I mean :(-- ewww.

Ruby also loves tiny apple bits, or sometimes I just make apple slices for my kids and give her the core with lots of apple still on it, she gnaws at that for a while. Ruby LOVES LOVES LOVES dried banana chips and since I think she may be allergic to grains I use those as something starchy for her to eat everyday!

Did somebody say "bacon grease???" That was a staple at my childhood home in Texas. It's a wonder anyone survived! It went in every green vegetable that was ever cooked (for at least 2 hours!). Vicky, sometimes I mix some cooked, frozen spinach in with Ozzie's food and he seems to like that. Watch Jammer's weight. Ozzie put on some pounds during our experimental period. I finally started weighing out his food after the damage was already done. One would think raw would be less pork-a-fying than kibble but guess it's easier to control kibble volume. Jammers must be wondering what in the world she did to deserve her luck! Following you around...LOL...Ozzie does the same thing...I am never lonely in my kitchen!

Even I would eat just about anything flavoured with bacon grease (lol)!

Jamaica has never been a big "food" dog, but is now following me around wondering what I am going to try out on her next. The sardines were a BIG hit, haven't tried the can of green beans yet, am getting pumpkin tomorrow (fortunately, we've never had to use it), and I must have brought home more red meat (London Broil and ribs) this morning than I have probably bought in the last five years! Jamaica and I both might be eating red meat for dinner tonight... I understand they really don't need the vegetables, but I plan on giving her some, probably mixed in with the ground beef.

Jamaica loves to swim, but we try to save it for rivers and lakes ~ the Bay at Crissy Field is usually a little too rough, and I have heard too many stories of dogs getting sick from drinking Bay water. Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe is one of our all-time favourite places.

I so much appreciate all the wonderful advice ~ thanks.

I think Angus would eat rocks if we put cheese on them! We use it to encourage Angus to eat his ulfavored veggies. Bacon grease works too. Don't use much... can't be good for him. But we did use it when Angus went swimming in the Bay and drank about half of it. Gave him the runs real bad, and he was not fond of the canned pumpkin. A little bacon grease and he lapped them up! No more diarrhea! BTW the pumpkin is good for many stomach/bowel disorders. We keep it in our cabinet just in case. Rice too.

Jammers has always had some yogurt and cottage cheese ~ a tablespoon dolup ~ and never had a problem. And of course, she doesn't have a beard, because she is a little GIRL.... (lol)

Here's something else to think about. My experience with Ozzie is that he does not tolerate cow's milk dairy-like cottage cheese and yoghurt. I buy goat milk yoghurt at Trader Joe's and he loves it and tolerates it well. He is funny with his yoghurt beard!

Re ground beef...I think that it all depends upon your dog's tolerance for fat. Ozzie does not do well with anything high fat so if he gets beef it is usually ground round or ribs with visible fat minimized. However if Jammer's system tolerates fat well, then whatever! Use the higher fat form of ground beef.
