Jamaica had beans, a minced brussel sprout and cottage cheese for breakfast (I feed twice a day). Still no after-effects of the larger-than-usual serving of chicken from last night. And unless I see something untoward, I will probably just let her eat the skin as well. There haven't been any poops to check yet, but I would think it would take the dry kibble a few days to evacuate her system anyway.

Sardines seem to be a staple and so I guess we'll be buying a case of those ~ what size portions do you serve?

When you serve ground beef, is it hamburger (I would almost think the dogs would benefit from the additional fat) or a higher grade? Lucy mentioned ground round, and I am surprised to see so many vegetables being added...(?)

I have ordered the highly recommended, Raw Dog Food, by Carina Beth MacDonald, but that may be a week or so. I don't cook myself, so this is quite an experience, and I am enjoying it!

Thank-you, Everyone.

Vicky, And yes we are having a really great time living here, we've been here three years-- it's beautiful!

Hi Vikcy, Our menu sounds similar to Robert and Joan. Ruby gets the skin on all of the chicken she eats-- though now I'm wondering if she eats the skin first like Angus?? But she always gets it with the skin and has not had any issues with that. She's not a huge eater so I'm not worried about her eating the fat, and I think it's good for her coat and skin.

Ruby also loves canned sardines and canned salmon, I mix it with finely minced vegetables. For other variety meals I mix ground meat (lamb or beef usually) and add a tablespoon or two of raw or cooked minced veggies, fish oil, and shredded cheese. For Ruby, cheese makes everything taste better!

Angus eats the skin first. I think he likes it best. It has never given him any problems. We feed just regular people food, only his meat is raw, and his vegetables are usually just steamed and mixed with ground meat. Canned fish. He LOVES sardines.

Uh, oh.... better start taking the skin off. I am almost expecting some of the chicken to come back up, if you know what I mean.

I guess I was assuming the patties used a better grade beef than hamburger.

Laura & Rudy: I see you are in Sydney ~ I was born in Brisbane. Sydney is a wonderful city.

Vicky, I also take the skin off of big pieces of chicken (drumsticks, thighs, etc) when Ozzie has them. Too much skin gives him the big D! Wings, necks, you don't need to bother.

Most of the commercial patties, including FeedThis, are mixed with all kinds of supplemental herbs. I only know about FeedThis and they list their ingredients on the website. You could use ground round and mix with supplements if you wish. Stuff like sea vegetables, milk thistle, veggies, fish oil, whatever. Just check the formulations and add what the commercial foods have. There are a log of questions that are answered on K9 nutrition site run by Lew Olson. It's a Yahoo group that you can join: K9Nutrition@yahoogroups.com You could pose your question to that group. I'm sure you would get a good answer.

Hi!

In Australia many people feed raw just with regular people food-- chicken frames, chicken wings, beef brisket/rib bones, and lamb trimmings which the butchers here sell for about $6 for 2.5 lbs. Do you find in the US most people feed raw using a pet food-- like this Nature's Variety or others? If it's $40 for 12 patties, that seems like the same price or more than human food from the grocery store?

Hi, Lucy ~ I was just wondering how they differed from plain old hamburger patties, which I would suspect have too much fat content.

Vicky, I am concerned about Nature's Variety. They just had a recall on their chicken patties. Beef was not involved, this time! It is also pretty expensive..much more so than FeedThis. As I recall, its $40 for 12 patties.
