Sounds like a plan. Pigs feet as an appetizer, with a few country style ribs as the main course.
I think pigs' feet and pork hocks are both OK. However they are very fatty. I give Ozzie pork hocks but try to get the skin off!
Andrea - is pork hock the same as pigs feet!? I was at a spanish market and they had raw pigs feet in the butcher case, so I bought two. They are in the freezer at the moment - but has anyone ever given pigs feet to their dogs?
We got ourselves some pork riblets. They will sit in the freezer for 5 days, because I'm weird like that haha. But my husband and I are eating some country style ribs ourselves in a few days, so I'll give them a little taste when I'm preparing ours... I'm sure they are going to love it - they love anything we put in front of them. Including stinky pee-smelling beef kidney and liver... ugh, I hate cutting that stuff up - my hands smell like cow pee for hours.
Pork is one of Jake's main meats... as well as for my parents two dogs. It is a great inexpensive red meat and we've never had a problem... while I mainly buy shoulder roasts I don't worry about freezer time once I get it home as much of it has been previously frozen (not ideal but it's what's available)... although I do buy quite a bit at once and much of it will be refrozen for a month or so before getting around to it :)
They will love the rib bones -- Paddy does. It's his favorite type of bone, actually. I buy St. Louis style racks of ribs at BJ's and slice them into 3-4 rib portions, then freeze. The end ribs, the small ones, are very soft indeed.
Ohh boy - I have some country style spare ribs in the freezer now, since Saturday. When those come out to go in the crock pot for us - I guess the girls will get a taste for themselves....
Any pork bones that should not be fed? I guess I could just monitor like I do with the beef rib bones - once they've picked it clean, time to replace it..
I too feed plenty of pork -- Paddy loves it. I do generally freeze it first, but not always. Go for it, Jen! It's a good meat for your dogs. Promise.
So, because I'm a worry wart, Andrea...
Tell me that if I freeze pork for 4-5 days before giving it to my dogs - it will kill any trichinella spiralis that potentially could be in the pork I purchased. IF freezing kills any parasites that might be in it - we're getting pork next time I go to the store...
Someone talk me into trying pork for my ladies. I have always been afraid of pork because I read one time that there are some parasites or bacteria specific to pork that can make your dog very sick (tricho-something). My girls have only ever had chicken, turkey, beef and fish.
Something scared me away from pork long ago, so I've never given it to them. But, when the grocery doesn't have the beef rib bones that the girls like so much, I'd like to pick up pork, if someone can talk me into it...
