omg.. Andrea, can you break that down into a brand name pill?  My head is swimming.

Yes, that is true about raw salmon-especially in some areas of the country-the NW US in particular.  I have heard that freezing for a couple of weeks takes care of the problem.  There is also the issue about farm vs wild salmon.  If one can afford to feed your dog raw wild caught salmon, then one is definitely in the minority!!  I prefer to give Ozzie wild caught Alaskan salmon that is in a tin.  I do wash it thoroughly because of the salt, but the processing should take care of any parasites.

I just read that raw salmon (and other fish that swim upstream to breed) can be deadly to dogs because of a parasite.  Any thoughts?

Denise, we raw feeders actually feed raw eggs.  I'll let Andrea recommend when to offer them to Murphy.  He's young, so probably soon.  Some actually just present the egg in its shell outside for the dog to figure out.  Paddy never has figured it out, plus he tends to eat the yolk and leave the white, so I open the egg and scramble the innards, then crush the shell, which he generally isn't interested in eating but sometimes nibbles a bit.  He loves raw eggs, though.  I give him 2-3/week.  And I feed canned sardines (in water) too, along with canned tuna (in water).  Fresh oily fish is very expensive and I just can't afford to feed raw fish to him (plus I'm not sure he'd eat it) -- but he loves the raw sardines and tuna, along with liver, heart and tongue, pork spareribs (both country style and regular), beef shanks (without the bone; until recently have been able to get these reasonably at BJ's, but they are frankly getting up there in price).  He will not eat turkey at all.  He will eat cornish game hens when I can find them on deep discount, but they are awfully bony.  Just feed what's available and affordable, and your dog will be fine!

Poop watching is not a career, but it is something we all do just along the way as an observation about feeding balance.  Some obsess; most of us don't.  It's understandable that you would (1) not find this easy considering the size of your property and (2) not be drawn immediately to this practice, just because -- but at some point it may be of interest to you because you may want to know if your bone-to-meat ratio is right...or not!  Feeding raw doesn't have to be fraught with anxiety over much of anything!

Thank you Trudy!! Yes, Murphy seems to have no issue with the offerings, we will (let that be, I will make a decision where I wish to feed him) but good to know how you handle this as well. I am grateful for your guidance and I am working my way through old posts both here and on yahoo.  I spent the weekend reading, its back to work with me tomorrow, but we are on our way.  I feel good about the decision.  I will wonder about things now and again and I'm not sure I will ever wish to a poop watcher as I can tell many of my new "raw" gang seems to be !!

Thanks Andrea.

Murphy will be 6 months tomorrow and I will thaw before feeding - does make sense, and will be mindful to go slow with new things.  I used to give prior dogs hardboiled eggs.  Does anyone have thoughts on that?

I did a bit of shopping and came home with cutup chicken gizzards and calves liver and a meaty bit of spare rib.  If I separate these these items and freeze, can I feed it frozen or should the food be brought to room temp?

Way to go, Denise!  I know you'll find all the support you need at the RMB group and here, in this forum.

As I said, I feed Paddy on a towel inside -- but we don't have a large yard or a covered area, plus it gets cold here (not as cold as at Andrea's, though!), so I would not want to feed him outside anyway.  I just depends on your preferences.  I probably wouldn't want raw goo all over my doggie door, so I'd want to make a choice about where to feed and stick to it.

It's wonderful, wonderful, that Murphy has taken to the food so quickly -- as I'm sure you read on my blog, it took Paddy weeks to switch, and even now he will turn up his nose at food and fast rather than eat something he doesn't want.  I just keep offering it over and over, and eventually hunger wins out.

Keep at it, and at some point introduce yourself on the RMB list -- you'll get a big welcome there!

Andrea,

Murphy had his last bit of kibble Thursday night.  I have been feeding chicken since then.  This morning it was a breast (partly frozen) and Friday and Saturday a series of leg/drumsticks.  I have been in touch with Trudy here and based on that have joined and been lurking on rawmeatybones@yahoo.com and taking all manner of notes. I have spent the weekend between that yahoo group and primarily your postings here (based again on Trudy's suggestion) making a list of things that I might begin with.  So far, I "hear" heart and liver and salmon oil capsule.. NO on chicken and turkey necks.  I also have added to my list: pork riblets, meaty ribs, lamb chop and/or shank, 1/2 chicken, and offal (and darned if I know what the heck that is - Yet).  I also wish to note that on yahoo, there is lots of chat about poop and honestly, I have several acres and Invisible Fence. Murphy roams freely and poops remotely.  I can say without following Murphy in the high grass and woods that I may never really know what the heck is poop looks like. Is that really of consequence?  Must I put on the high water boots and grab my walking stick. lol.  Thank you, Andrea, for accepting my friend request. I feel this is a good decision on my part and I look forward to learning lots from you and others here as well as on Yahoo.

(not sure exactly how I did it, but I typed this and rather than post here, I sent it to myself....I think... I'm goofy that way.

Hi group,
I'm making the switch. I'm doing it!!

Quick early Sunday morning question.  When I present the chicken to Murphy, he picks it up, walks with it through the doogy door (that took a few tries for him to figure out how to get himself and his food both through the door - funny) and then he plops it down on the grass outside and stands over it while he eats.  How comfortable and should I be concern that he is choosing not to eat at the dining room table? Kidding.  That he does not stay near his "dining towel".  He stand the whole time and likely consumes fallen oak tree leaves, bits of dead and dying grass, and heaven knows what else?  Issue or not at all.

I'm learning!

Thank you.
Denise
