Hi Tessa, I am surprised that Feed This couldn't give you specific information.  Did you call them and discuss your needs.  We used Feed This for about a year and I found them to be quite helpful.  They do deliver premeasured cartons of food, but once it is thawed you can give any amount you wish.  In our case, one carton of food was a days worth of food.  However you can get a postage scale and weigh out whatever you need for each meal after the carton is thawed.  It can be in the refrigerator for several days after thawing.  I stopped using them because I decided to prepare Ozzie's food on my own.  I can assure you that Feed This will be less expensive than S & Cs!   How does Tessa do with chicken wings?  That's a good start for raw feeders.

Hmmm so most catch on right away... he ate the meat and little bones just not the thicker bones... maybe because he is used to chewing on antlers he doesn't realize to eat them?  The towels are a really good idea.  And Jake is weird with skin as well; he saves it for last, spitting it out again and again till he finally swallows it.  What I ended up doing with the rest of the chicken leg quarters was cutting them up into large chucks (but without the big bones) for the rest of this week to ease him into it.  Any suggestions what might be a better peice to start with other than leg quarters?  I've read bone-in breast and necks are good peices to start with as well.

If Jake is having a little trouble with raw eating, let him get good and hungry! It is an old training technique to not feed them for a day or two ~ IT WILL NOT HURT THEM (lol)~. Most dogs are food motivated, and will respond.

Jamaica picked up the eating raw right away, too. I have several old white towels and I put one down on the floor and the meat goes on that. She was then taught that it STAYS there.

When she is finished, the towel goes into a bag, and when I have a laundry-load full they all go in the wash with a dash of Clorox.

Hi Heather,

Zoey, my 16 lb frenchie got all foamy the first time I gave her a chicken wing and spit in out and gagged several times. I ended up holding it for her so she could chew it while I held it and pulled some of the skin off it since that was what she seemed to be having trouble with. The next time I took the skin off and held one end and she did better. Now she eats with the skin no problems and bigger pieces she puts her foots on and tears at. The other dogs figured out from day one including the puppy at 8.5 weeks. They just crunch through them and move them  back and forth in their mouth. It still makes me nervous though and I supervise carefully for choking. I imagine that I will get over that.

How long did it take you doodle to eat the bones?  Last night was Jake's fist experience with bone-in meat and I encountered two things: first I forgot the DH is an anti-bacterial clean freak and second that Jake had no idea what to do with the big chuck of chicken and sat there licking it in his bowl.  I tried holding the leg to get Jake to chew on it; that didn't work.  I put it on the ground for him to get the idea of using his feet to hold onto it; that didn't work (and when I was reminded about the neat-freak and so nicely had to sanitize the floors after dinner.)  To get him to eat it, I ripped it all up into large chunks where he did finally get the point of eating the bones (after repeatedly spitting them out on the floor) but he still would not eat all the bones. I should mention that Jake has always had raised food dishes and is used to eating high up, is this possible with raw or will he need to go back to the ground?

Vicky, thanks for the link! Cindy I'm jealous!  Jake had his first turkey burger and raw egg with shell mixed into his HK breakfast this morning; he loved it and I can't wait to try more!!

That is wonderful!  You are such a good Doodle Mum.  It will make you so happy to see how much they enjoy their meals, and what happy and healthy dogs they will be.

The dogs (including the puppy) had their first full meat meal today - Chicken breast - with the bone. It was so cool to watch them eat it. I was especially impressed with how well my little frenchie did. She is only 16 lbs but she got her foot on the meat and pulled and ripped and got her inner wolf going and had a great time. And the puppy - 8.5 weeks old  - did a great job - got right through the chicken and the bone, used his feet and moved the meat from side to side. The best thing, it took them a little while to finish, rather than there usual 2 minutes.
