Hurley, the chocolate ALD in the picture, had his first therapy dog visit yesterday. How exciting for us both. We went with Hurley's Therapy Dog trainer and his lovely, Sophie. Hurley is basically in his internship as a therapy dog. He did great!
A little background. Hurley is 5 years old and the 4-legged love of my life. I had always wanted him to be a therapy dog. But because he has always been a bit shy (but very gentle) two different trainers said he would never become a therapy dog. So I waited until he turned 5 and by accident met a Therapy Dog trainer that is amazing. It didn't take more than a few weeks before Hurley and I were ready to take the CGC test which Hurley passed first time out. Yea.
I am a caregiver to my husband and I volunteer at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health located here in Las Vegas, Nv. facilitating the Powerful Tools for Caregivers Course. So I am very familiar with caregiving demands through my own experiences with my husband and prior with my mother.
Sidney, the black pup, recently joined our family. When he is older I plan to engage Sidney in therapy dog training and visits. He is a character.
I don't believe Alliance of Therapy Dogs (formerly Therapy Dogs Inc) has those requirements as well. Just that you follow your vets protocol, neg fecal and up to date on rabies.
They said because of the people in the hospitals with suppressed immune systems they didn't want to risk them getting sick or the dogs getting something from the locations they visited. I thought at least she could do a library or courthouse. I haven't looked at TDI yet to see if they are in my area but I will.
When Guinness was certified for TDI that was not a requirement....maybe you should look into other organizations. They just needed to have an annual exam, be up to date on vaccines, and have a clean fecal. I don't believe there were any other health requirements.
I was most disappointed this week when I started doing the Pet Partners on-line course to get re-registered with Pet Partners. I was with Delta Society from 2010 - 2012 but when I went to renew with Sophie in 2012 they were in the process of transitioning to Pet Partners and they weren't doing evaluations so I had to go with a local organization and just after we were evaluated Sophie got sick and could no longer work. So, enter AnnaBelle. I've been waiting on AnnaBelle to mature enough for 3 years now, ugh ... the other day I decided I was going to go ahead and start the process and I would start with Lucy and get her registered while I continue to work with Annabelle. When I started the chapter on Health I was shocked to read that there was now a rule on Immuno-suppressent Drugs. If they are on any of these types of drugs they are in-eligible to test. I didn't remember this from before. Lucy is on two meds for her Allergies that fall into this category so is disqualified from participating in the program.
Yep, you never know who needs the love of a dog. And for those little moments when Finn gets bored or is a bit reserved there are the big moments when he leaves my side and really connects with someone who needs him. You just can't train for that -- I'm convinced doodles are special that way.
