I am excited to make our 1st official visit to a assisted living community. We needed to drop off our paperwork & they asked that I bring in Leo to meet the activity director. We ended up staying and meeting many people...I hated to leave, leo just kept moving along and did everything asked of him...I am so proud of him and happy to see all the hard work and patience with training has paid off. I can wait to visit the facility on a regular basis, as the staff and residence were great to be with. We still have a lot to learn, but that visit helped me and my confidence in Leo greatly! He probably always knew he could do it....

Here is a late post to Robyn & Dave regarding Tennis Balls on Walkers.
Just know that you are not alone in that department. The advice you got about teaching them with the leave it and treat commands are dead on. My goofball Malibu got so excited when she see's the balls on the walkers, it's to the point of being hysterical. I can't be horrifically hardcore about it, and try to see the humor in it. She will leave them alone, but the sheer look of pleasure she gets when she thinks she can get one of the balls is a riot!

Ozzy has the same problem he gets very excited when he meets people, my trainer said after they turn 2 the calm down much more. Ozzy is also very big so his jump can knock you over. Zoey has only completed and passed one class but I did sneak her in the hospital to visit my mother in law, and Zoey brought out the best.

I am so encouraged to hear everybody talk about their dogs. Leo is 20 months and recently passed his TDI. We still need to consistently work on "gentle" greetings. He, like it seems all others from what I am reading, LOVES people & attention, he doesn't jump but isn't excactly calm either. I was afraid during our test that that might be a problem, but he was very good.

Leslie,
Your last sentence is very important. On one of the forums/groups I follow, one of the trainers has this (or something similar) in her signature: "You don't always get what you want, you get what you reinforce."

If you want calm greetings, you need to work on calm greetings - NOW! Don't "wait for the dog to mature" all the while, reinforcing exuberant greetings. It is 10x easier to train a dog than it is to untrain a dog.

Another good nugget to keep in mind is this one: "in every interaction with your dog, one of you is training the other."

Halas has the same problem with sitting calmly to be greeted. He loves meeting people, so we're working on that one. We're focusing a little more on flyball and rallyo (just started) for now, and we'll just continue with the other stuff for a year or so until he calms down enough. Halas is 20 months old today, so he's about the same age as your Divot. He managed to sit calmly long enough to get his CGC in November, but it's just not something he's consistent with. Or, I should probably say, I'm not consistent about enforcing.

Divot is 21 months old now and is still a lot of puppy. He passed his CGC on 10/7/08. We plan on going for the Therapy Dog International this summer. He's
been through the class but we need to work more on the "sit" when greeting.
He's so friendly and has a very laid back personality. We're looking forward to sharing him with those in need.
