Okay, Murphy is going on his first visit Saturday. It is to an assisted living home.
I'm a little nervous. We kept trying to get in with the New Orleans groups but they are still unorganized post Katrina. I finally contacted someone in Baton Rouge. She immediately sent me an email saying since Murphy had his CGC I am welcome to join them.
Any tips?

Great, just a little tip when doing this, when we go on visits we would take along doggy treats or something they were allowed to have, this way if one of the residents of the nursing home wanted to give them treats, I would give them what they could have to give my girls, and it didn't interfer or upset their stomachs. I think this is one thing we tend to overlook with nursing homes, the people in them want so much to give back to our animals and they think by feeding them they are...lol. My Hannah loves bacon and trains well with it, so i crunch it up into little peices and that is her treat and she only gets about two slices, so she is not over feed, and we use butterball turkey bacon so it's good for her.

that is awesome Hannah!!!! Obi is going to start doing nursing home visits too..He hasn't tested yet, can't find a place around here yet to test him...but a local nursing home asked Harli on Saturday if she would be interested in bringing Obi in to visit once a month :)

what a great group!!~ Our golden-doodle, Obsidian, is my daughter Harli's service dog. He is an 'owner-trained' service dog. We use the TeamWorks books and the assistance of other owner-trained service dogs. Obi is now 2yrs old. We very much would like to train him in the area of therapy as well. Harli recieved Obi when he was 6wks old for the purpose of service and it would be agreat way for her to 'give back' to cross-train him into therapy. I look forward to all the advice and tips this group can give us!~

I just wanted to tell you that I received Kahlua's papers & tag on Saturday. TD Inc had a VERY quick turn-around. I mailed the papers out on Monday (PA->WY) and had it back before the week was up. She is now ready to go & I look forward to making our first independent visit this week.

Congrats to all the new therapy teams passing. The doodles are doing extremely well!. It is soooo rewarding going into the hospital and assisted living place for me. Even if one person is grumpy and doesn't wanta visit, there are 50 people who do want a visit. On my way out of the hospital, it is inevitable, I'll run into someone in the elevator asking if I can go see their loved one, or did I go to such and such a floor. I'll make a special trip back to where they want me to just to make their day. It is so very worthwhile. The staff love playing with Malibu and throw her ball down the hallways. Even one of the doctors stopped me and asked about her breeding, and low and behold, he just bought a labradoodle from the same breeder that I did. He was so happy that they shared some of the same bloodlines and that his puppy could potentially turn out well like Malibu did.
I was always worried that Malibu would jump up on people, but somehow she knows she has to behave in the places where we go. At home when some of her best friends come, she jumps on them, or on my neighbor, but never has she done it in the hospital. She even starts to whine, and cry and jump in the car when we're pulling into the parking lot of the facilities where we go. She's so excited and is even pulling on her leash to hurry us up! So please keep at it, and it is so rewarding making people smile and learn about their lives and dogs.

Wow! I had the opportunity to observe the TDI test being given today. My dog is too young to test yet but I wanted to see how close he is to being ready. There were 8 dogs testing today, only 1 did not pass. The ones who did pass all had at least 1 element that needed retesting. All these dogs were impressive and will be great therapy dogs. The administrator of the test was fantastic. She is very much in favor of the dog passing and was very informative about TDI, very passionate about therapy work. I'm so glad to have been able to observe before testing. It will not be nearly as nerve wracking when the time comes for us to test. Zeke turns 1yr the end of the month so I plan to test him as soon after that as can be scheduled. Comparing him to the dogs I saw today he should do very well. I can't wait to get started sharing doodle love!

I remember when I used to take my German shorthairs with me to work (at a nursing home), they loved it. One day I was at a dog show, watching a friend compete and I had my dog, Cookie with me. There was a woman in a wheel chair watching at ringside. Cookie pulled me over to her and laid her head on the woman's lap. She was a "natural' therapy dog.
