Toby will be two years old next month and he got his therapy certification in February of this year through Caring Canines of FLorida. He also earned hid CGC - Canine Good Citizenship. We are insured under a blanket policy for 2million for only $35.00 a year - membership fee. We began visiting local hospitals and nursing homes with the group. Toby did great - except for the time he tried to get the tennis ball off of a walker! He is one of the youngest in the group. I noticed that he tried to leap from the window when I picked my daughter up from her elementary school. I talked to the principal and guidance department - I actually wrote them a letter from Toby. Said...."I want to come to school, I love kids to read to me, I am insured, hypoallergenic, I will be a good boy.....etc. The let me come in the last 6 weeks of school. After the second week, I had a schedule every fifteen minutes in a different class for a 3 hour visit every Tuesday. I just went to open house last night for my daughter and have been invited back this year. It is a great way to keep up Toby's certification, school is right down the street and Toby has the school all to himself. He is one of several dogs on other types of visits. Since he is still young, he likes being with the kids so much better. I am hoping to get him him in the yearbook this year! It is so good for Toby, good for my heart and special for my daughter to have the "school dog".

Good evening to all! One of the reason I joined this group was to be able to learn from all of those that do. So now I have a question for this group? School will be starting soon in our area. I want very much to get Charlie(the doodle boy) involed in our area doing therapy work. He passed his TDI so is very ready. The school that my DD's go to don't have a dog that comes to visit for reading. So finally my question is...How do I find work for Charlie? Also we have an Senior Center behind our house that also has an Adult Day Care. I was lead to believe from a source up there that they were not interested at all in a Therpay dog. I find that hard to believe. We all know that you can't but help to love a doodle! Suggestion....Thanks:)

I am a high school librarian and would love to train Lola to be a "Touch dog". We have been to puppy classes so far. She loves the play part and definitely is food motivated. I am trying to find a better training situation in the St. Louis area.

Hi -- I have a 7-month old Labradoodle named Wilson who's just 7 weeks into formal training. He'll have his Good Citizen certificate (if all goes well) in another 16 weeks, and from there we'll start working on Delta Society requirements. No hurry since Wilson's just a pup. I'm happy to know there's a group here where I can come to ask questions, brag, whine, and otherwise find and give support. Thanks for being here for us "new kids on the block."

Hi,
I am interested in Therapy dogs as part of my program. I am really at the beginning stages of getting information I need. My actual goal is to be able to donate puppies for the purpose of them being placed with someone. I thought this would also be a good place to join to help get started.
Thanks!

I had one in mind. However when I spoke to them they were not
interested. I will go back an speak with them again. I would like
to do Nursing Homes, group homes and a reading assist. I'm planning on speaking with the reading resource teacher at my girls school.
There is a group in my area Paws for People. They do alot. However, Charile would not be able to pass there requirements.
What I hope to gain from this group, is insight and how to be the
best team we can be. I love Charlie and want to be able to share him with other people.

Welcome Ann! How exciting to pass. TDI is even a bit more stringent than Delta. Do you have a therapy group locally that you will visit with?

Charlie passed his TDI test last Sunday. I'm very excited ! I'm open to all information you can give me. His paper work is almost ready to submit. I'm having a hard time on his picture .It seems that his mouth is always open! Thanks in advance for your help.

Would love to know a little more about the types of Pet Therapy you are involved in. There are so many opportunities! Both my boys are registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc. We do visits to Nursing Homes, 3 times a week, a monthly "read to the Dogs" program at a local library, a monthly visit to a Young Adult Care Center (most of these folks have mental disabilities), we are on call for hospice visits and do other one-time special visits with our local group. This Fall we are going to be doing a monthly visit to an elementary school working with the reading resource specialist to encourage reluctant readers. I couldn't do all these things if I only had one dog but having 2 allows me to visit with whichever one I feel meets the needs of the person or facility we are visiting. OK, that's our agenda, How about you...........
