Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

I'll be thinking about you and Paz tomorrow, and Paz's special purpose and wishing you well.

Paz is a true hero as are all of our doodles in little and big ways. They're very special beings. :)

Bless you Paz. Get your sleep buddy. I know you will do a great job.

Thanks Jane.  Paz and I are a work in progress.  I feel like each day I am learning new things, it's like raising kids and having grandkids!  I really value all my DK friends, because our doodles are beloved family members.  Everyone on this site has a great sense of humor, and it's as if we've all been friends forever.  Paz is snoring on my bed right how, with his head across my feet which means I can's get up to go to the bathroom because I might disturb his beauty rest!  He's working tomorrow helping the kidnapping victim who is going to court tomorrow, and is being prepped to testify!  It's a tough case and the victim can only maintain her composure if Paz is with her.  I figure I won't wake him up because he will need his rest.

Thanks Bonnie, Paz can be stubborn too, because there are a few dogs with whom he's had bad experiences and I just cross the street.  Unfortunately, lots of people are adopting pitbulls because they all think they are "Cesear Milan" and the owners are clueless about the best way to manage a dog with such strength.  I've seen owners who look like they weigh about 100 lbs, being dragged down the street by huge pitbulls.  I know this may sound awful, but I just cross the street because I'm actually fearful of any confrontation; I don't even try the "look at me" because it might not work.

Charlotte, You and Paz are an inspiration every time you post.  Yes, the horse blinders is a poor trainer's tool for the Look command. ;o) Owen is the most stubborn dog we have ever had and "look at me" is something he refuses to do even for treats. He's 4 1/2 years old. sigh.

Hi All,

I live in Lower Manhattan and we are surrounded by dogs wherever we go.  My trainer who has worked with Paz since he was a puppy, and then provided him with his Delta therapy classes, has clear rules when walking Paz down a busy street, crowded with lots of dogs.  Whenever a dog approaches that I don't know, I tell Paz to "look" which means he looks up at me; the trainer said that dogs meeting each other head to head can be very confrontational, therefore teaching the dog to focus on me, rather than the other dog is a good way to avoid confrontation.  It takes a lot of time and patience, but Paz will look at me when I say look.  There are some dogs I will avoid whenever possible, because they tend to be confrontational; we've had bad experiences with pit bulls who take a very confrontational stand, and some other dogs, particularly dogs that are not neutered.  I guess what I am trying to say is that by having your dog look at you when another dog is approaching, is similar to putting blinders on, because it avoids dogs approaching each other eye to eye, which can be confrontational.  Whenever Paz is in the dog park, dogs approach each other by sniffing their rears and so forth, which is a more natural way for dogs to meet.

Oh no! Looks like I just put my foot in my mouth again! Well, we have plenty of our own issues, they just don't involve blinders...yet. :) I like your HBA idea! LOL
