Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

Started by Stacy. Last reply by Stacy Aug 8, 2019. 10 Replies

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

I am going to try the horse blinder trick. What is it about little white yappy dogs and our doodles? Chance goes nuts when he sees one of these.

I do it with Owen. Ricki, you've started a True Confessions thread. Maybe we need a new group on DK. Horse blinders Anonymous.

Oh BG, I'm positive your DH's attempts are usually wasted. Who can resist a good sale?

LOL BG....my DH has just given up.  I haven't tried to cover Murph's eyes but I have resorted to turning around and running in the opposite direction when I see a little white yappy dog coming towards us.

It sounds like the "hand over eyes" method may be more useful than I originally thought! LOL

LOL, BG!

hmm Karen, my DH has made the same move on me when rushing me past a sale sign in the mall...

Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I have occasionally put my flattened hand at the side of JD's face (like a blinder on a horse) to prevent him from looking at and barking at another dog on a walk. Usually, all it takes is for me to calmly move my hand toward his face and he turns his head in the opposite direction to avoid it, lol, which is all that's needed.

Saw an interesting non-training moment today on the morning walk. As we came into view of a man with a tiny dog he picked it up and covered it's eyes. He explained it was to keep it from barking. Hmmmm....

Wow, Diane....that really is one athletic Doodle girl.  I agree about the training.

We have a 5ft brick wall around part of the house.  Hurley doesn't jump over it (he is 55 lbs) but his doodle girlfriend who weights about 35 lbs goes right over it.  I think it depends on how athletic the individual dog is.  Also, my thought would be that proper training should also be a help in dissuading a dog from jumping over a fence.
