This past weekend had been a rough one for me. I learned around midnight on Saturday that my very best childhood and longtime friend lost her 21 year old daughter on Saturday morning in a tragic car accident. The heartache this has caused has affected so many people. The family is based near Mackinaw (about 20 miles south) in Michigan and the accident happened there. My friend and DH now live in Chicago due to his job. She called me from the road and I could only listen to her sobs and…

Biking and Marriage!

After what seems like months of rain, our weather is looking up and my DH and I have started bike riding. He is a serious biker and I am a not so serious biker. Any bike ride I go on has to have a beginning and an end designated BEFORE we start the ride. This is important because my DH can ride for hours and even rides 100 miles every year on his birthday. I could ride 100 miles too, but it would involve about 5 nights in a hotel and lots and lots of stops for…

RESCUING a DOODLE-of-some-sort

On Friday, Michele of the DRC sent my DH and I to check out a doodle at the San Bernardino City Animal Control Shelter.  It was to be the dog's last day but the DRC had gotten a hold put on him (Yay!).  He was supposed to be a large white male doodle, but when Michele spoke with a worker there, she was told that the dog was small.   Michele was trying to find a foster home or get the poodle rescue to take him, but there…

Harper's First Haircut

Our little Harper girl got her first haircut this weekend on the eve of her eight-month birthday.  I was loathe to say goodbye to her beautiful, curly locks, but it was just too long for the summer.  I think the 'do came out pretty well, and she certainly doesn't look shaved.  I'm hoping that in a few weeks she will look a little less shorn and more like my dog again!  Next time… Continue

Dilema

My friend (I think that is still the proper term) picked up a "free puppy" at WalMart Monday, saying she couldn't resist and was afraid of what might happen to him. Her husband was furious because she is terminally rescuing something. She brought the little guy in and asked me to keep it to "save her marriage". Much to my amazement, he looked like a "solid black Murphy".  Took him to the vet, got his first shots, worming etc. With the web feet, her guess was a labradoodle or a Newfie and 8…

Accidental training

About a month ago, we decided to let Luna roam the bedroom at night instead of being locked in her crate.  It was starting to get warm in the bedroom so we thought she might enjoy spending some time on the cool wood floor.

We quickly realized that in the morning Luna decided it was time for us to get up... and let us know by licking any exposed body parts within her reach.  This was pretty annoying if we wanted to sleep in!

One day... my fiance tried saying…

Saying GoodBye (OT)

My 1st memories of the realities of War were as a young girl of maybe 7.  I was at a girl scout meeting when my Mom arrived, pulled me aside and told me I would be going home with one of her friends after the meeting.  I later learned that my Dad's bosses Son had been killed in Vietnam.  That memory has always been with me.  I worked for the Air Force for 13 years, am married to a retired Air Force officer, but never in my 50+ years has the reality of War been so real as this past week. … Continue

Vern and the Man in the Lawn Chair!

Most of you know that our Vern is a big ol' chicken. Yesterday, I was doing some training with them up at the state park and both dogs were doing beautifully until Vern spotted a man sitting in a lawn chair. I did not have my camera, so some of this blog will be a reenactment. Here is how threatening the man appeared:

Vern started backing into me and nothing I did could…

Halas Gets a New Ride

I was 2 years into a 3 year lease on a very nice Lexus ES350.  I took it in last Friday for the oil change and tire rotation, and I got the new RX350 as a loaner.  I decided that in a year, when my current lease was up, I was going to buy a used RX.  I was putting too many miles on this car to justify leasing my next one, and the new RXs were too expensive for me, so I'd have to go with a used one.  I mentioned this to my salesperson (I've used the same one every time I've leased something… Continue

Reno Trip to Grandma and Grandpa's ;)

Even though the weather was rain and snow for most of the week, I still got some great pictures of my parents back yard and the doods having fun, fun, fun!  People usually don't believe me when I tell them they have a mini park in their yard, put pictures prove it, and they planted every tree, bush and flower.  Had a great… Continue

A Dog of Many Colors

When we first went to pick our Molly girl up, she was the softest ball of fluffy black fur I had ever seen or felt. She was all black aside from a small heart shaped white patch on her chest.

Our breeder told us she would more than likely be blue/grey when she fully matured.

As the weeks go by, she has started to sprout (lol, do dogs sprout hair) white fur from her feet. The tips of her feet are now a light shade of grey almost white. Shortly after, she also started to sprout (again)… Continue

Lessons I've Learned

Throughout Remington's surgery and recovery I have learned so much.  Never in a million years did I think this process would have taught me so many things!

1) Remington is absolutely fine without Dan and I and adjusts quite well to situations.  I have always been one of those people who just could NOT stand to board my dog.  I was always so worried that he wouldn't be okay, that he would be scared, or that something bad would happen to him.  We would do anything in our power to… Continue

I told you to "leave it"...

5:30am: Lola's worked up barking at something out the front window downstairs.....she stops, I (eventually) fall back to sleep

6:15am: daily wake-up "whine" from Lola directly in our faces......"Come on guys...gotta pee, and I'm hungry!"

I walk down stairs, and practically fall on my you-know-what slipping in a pile of vomit. GREAT start to the day! I keep walking, half-asleep, and find our main floor in state you'd only find in a horror movie (maybe not quite, but it…

I am proud of local "Petland"!!!

Today, my little girl client wanted to go see the puppies. OK, so off we went to Petland near her house. We walked in, and went toward the puppy glass cages, and there were something different about them..... Yes, all of the cages were filled with dogs/puppies.....But.... All of the dogs and puppies in the cages were from 3 ~4 different local shelters!!!! Each puppies/dog had a tag showing which shelter he/she belonged to and few descriptions of them. They also indicated informations in…

Wanna go for a walk...?

Traveler was sound asleep on the bed this morning, and I was talking to him, 'ya know, sharing world events and daily happenings, when I tossed in the phrase 'wanna go for a walk?'  Just to see if he was REALLY listening to me.  Yup.  He was instantly on high alert.  He's so cute when he hears that phrase!  Tilts his head, stares intently into my eyes--did I really mean what he just heard?  So we had to go for a walk in the nearby park, where he got a cookie from Kaye, the cookie lady, who does… Continue

Recovery Day 12 & 13

Day 12

OMG... Remington got sick for the first time after his surgery and I cannot even tell you how gross it was!  I have never seen his puke look like it did or had as much trouble cleaning it up!  I seriously thought that I was going to have a stain on my carpet.  Several rounds of Resolve and 20 minutes later I got the spot out.  I sure didn't expect to deal with that on Day 12... Day 4 or 5 maybe, but Day 12... no!  I'm not sure why it was so bad, maybe it was some of the… Continue
