It’s hard to believe that my dad has been gone for 20 years. So many of my memories of him are as clear as if they happened yesterday. Let me tell you just a little bit about what a great man he was.

He was a quiet man, but when he did speak, what he said was either profoundly wise, hilariously funny or he wanted to talk about you.

He was extremely humble. He would graciously accept a compliment but would almost always try to give the credit to someone else.

He proudly served his country through several tours in Europe as well as all over this country. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Force, the 236th. And at the time of his honorable discharge, he had earned over 5 medals.

He was the king of puns. You couldn’t out “pun” him if you tried.

He was a fabulous cook. He would collect the best recipes from around the world and modify them to be even more spectacular than the original.

He had a great connection with nature and the outdoors, a love that both of my parents thankfully passed down to me. I grew up camping and hiking with my family and my dad’s unique observations of nature always fascinated me.

He loved to laugh and did so often though quietly. His sneeze however, could be heard through several zip codes.

He was the most forgiving man I’ve ever known and when he loved, he loved deeply and unconditionally.

I’m thankful that though the years I had with him seem relatively short, I have a lifetime of treasured memories and life-lessons that I hope to pass on to my son.

This is a beautiful tribute to your Dad.  Isn't it wonderful to have all these special memories to hold on to?  It's clear that you carry him in your heart....

Donna, your father sounds like a wonderful man!  A nice reminder to those of us that still have their father to make the most of every day.

How lucky you are to have such an amazing father and how thoughtful to remember him in this way.  My dad was much like yours sounds, except for the armed services.  He has been gone from me 28 years and there are times when I still miss him greatly.  So I know what you mean.  Thanks for sharing.

What a tribute to your dad.  We can tell he was a wonderful man.  My dad has been gone 10 years and I miss him every day as I am sure you do.  My dad was  from the 'greatest generation' and also was modest - I think men of that time were more men of action than boasters.  My dad and yours must have been related - my dad's sneeze was also unilaterally heard in several states.

Wow! He sounds like an amazing father, and a great guy! You were fortunate to have him.

My Dad has been gone for 20 years as well. I occasionally still get twinges of missing him. That suprises me after so long.

After reading your tribute I realized that my daughter probably can't pick my dad out in photographs. I wonder if her children (when she has them) will know what her father looked like?

A lovely tribute to a fine man.  I'm sure this would bring tears to his eyes, and joy to his heart.
