Coat types

Doodles come in three main coat types. Wool, fleece and hair. If you consider a woolly wool coat to be at one end of a scale and shedding coarse hair coats to be at the other end, your doodle could have a coat anywhere in-between. Not only that...it could be a combination of more than one type. Coats can also be very curly, somewhat curly, spiral curls, wavy or quite straight.

Hint for maintaining your favourite look.

You will find lots of pictures on this site of great looking doodles. Use them to take to your groomer to show what look you like or use them to follow for home grooming.

Coat Change from Puppy to Adult
Somewhere between 8 and 12 months doodles start growing their adult coats. Matte time! Since they don't shed, you need to comb the puppy coat out. This takes quite a bit of dedication and this stage can go on for several months. If you let your puppy mat at this time and resort to shaving, you STILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM. You cannot shave it away. At some point, you must comb that puppy coat out. To make this stage easier, scissor the coat to about 2 inches in length so there is less to tangle. A seriously good way to reduce brushing is to buy a high speed blower. It produces cool air at high volume and really helps clean and untangle the coat.

Combing your doodle.
Use a steel comb. Start from one foot and brush..yes brush with a brush..the hair up. Then  start down at the foot again and brush down in layers, making sure to always get to see the skin in the area you are working on before you go on. After about and inch or two, comb where you brushed. If the comb won't go thru, start again. Work thru the whole coat in this fashion.
Make sure you hit all the areas.
inside, outside and back and front of legs
upper and lower chest
sides, back and under tail
top of head and neck all the way around
under ears, chin and face
If a wool dog is very matted, it can take 10 hours to demat. If you have a fleece coat that is in good shape, it should take an hour or less to brush and comb the whole dog thoroughly.
Worst trouble spots: in front of hind legs, armpits, under tail and neck

To Do List for regular maintenance.
1. brush and comb twice a week or when ever you feel mattes ..dampen after brushing
These things to be done every 4 to 6 weeks
2. trim hair from between eyes as required to keep it from poking into the eyes
3. shave belly
4. trim hair from around anus and on male or female parts to prevent messy mattes that can get infected from bacteria
5. clip nails
6. trim feet ...inside of feet, around toes and trim length so it just barely touches the ground.
7. trim hair above eyes so it does not obstruct sight
8. pull hair from inside ears and clean with ear cleaning solution
9. shave hair from base of ear to increase airflow into the ear

How to trim feet
You can trim feet with scissors or clippers. I prefer to use a combination of both. I first cup the dog's foot in my hand so the bottom is visible and keeping my scissors flat to the bottom of the foot, I trim all hair sticking beyond the foot. Next I take my clipper with a number 10 or 40 and trim inside between the large pad the the small toe pads. From the top of the foot looking down, I pull a hair back from toes and scissor hair from around nails and between toes. You can to this with a clipper too and make 'poodle toes'...not to be confused at all with poodle feet. You want the foot to have lots of volume from the top, but look clean underneath.

A friend of mine is taking her Labradoodle to the groomer, she wants to have the dog cut in a basic or standard Labradoodle Adult cut, not a puppy cut. Is there a standard cut for adult Labradoodles. What would be the lenght you would leave the hair on the body, legs, head, ears...etc.

Some of you mentioned the stainless steel snap-on combs and where to find them. You can find the Wahl steel combs online, like at PetEdge, RyansPets, etc. Or just google "stainless steel combs", they're pretty popular. :)

You can buy the whole set, or on some websites like Ryans, you can buy them individually. I'm thinking about buying some too, I've heard good things about them! :)

I haven't tried the QuickFinder, but there's a great website about nail clipping with photos:

http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/dog_nails.aspx

They have photos showing the tips of black nails, and when to stop cutting, etc. :) I like using the guillotine-style clippers because you can replace the blades and always have a sharp edge. :)

I tried it and returned it. The person who took it back said a lot of them had been returned. This was last year. Maybe they improved the technology by now.

Nancy - I have just plastic combs and they work fine for me - tho if I ever come across metal ones, I may give them a try because others say they are so nice. But like I said, so far the plastic have worked for me. I think I will look for a 3/4" comb - that might work better. I hope Gracie's skin feels better soon. And do let me know how things go with the grooming.

Thanks Denise and Nancy...I am going to try either today or tomorrow to give her a cut. I do know that she has to be totally clean and dematted. I have not had a problem keeping the mats down since I brush/comb her every other day. We just got back from a 7 day trip and she went to a Doggie Ranch where she spent most of her time in a pond and rolling in the dirt. She was absolutely the dirtiest I have ever seen her. You could feel the grit when you patted her. We brought her home and had to wash her. Usually you should get all the debris and mats out first but that was impossible. I spent three hours last night brushing, combing, using the dematter tool and cutting chunks out of her coat Even after a bath she had twigs and stuff stuck in her hair. Also, a few sore spots which I can only think were from the matting getting so tight that they pulled on her skin. Also, being outdoors she probably got nicked up a bit playing with the other dogs and plowing through brush and branches. Gracie has no hot spot problems or sensitive skin so I am watching the little red sores and bumps closely, I did cut the hair away from them. She looks like a moth got to her today. She is so clean and fluffy but looks very moth eaten. We were also told that when you get home from the Ranch the doggies usually sleep for two day straight. She is sound asleep on the bed and also crashed in the car ride home yesterday and after her bath. That made it very easy to work on her mats and grooming. I just rolled her over from side to side. I really don't want to make her stand for hours and clip her today so I am hoping to keep her clean enough so tomorrow I can clip her.

I don't have the metal combs (where do you get them?) and yes, when I tried clipping her she was clean and detangled. I feel like I made an attempt to get the comb tips down into the hair and had the back end up. I was a nervous wreck trying to clip her for the first time. Even my neighbor who clips her Springer Spaniels helped me and she was the one who kept getting the clippers stuck...then I tried it and the same thing. The getting the clippers stuck only is when we go against the hair. When we go with it we get nothing. I will try tipping the blade even more. My new clippers just arrived so I will give it a try. I used my neighbors which are also Oster but maybe they needed cleaning???? We used a brand new blade and comb???? I'll let you know how it all comes out when I finally get Gracie in the right moment to clip her. Here is a picture of her right now fast asleep. You can see the pink area on her left back leg where she has sores and also if you look closely up around her chest and armpits she is pink because I had to cut all the mats out. She has really fine soft whispy hair there. Poor baby. I just want to give her skin a rest!! I have now learned that the next time she goes to the Doggie Ranch (August) I will make sure she has a very short haircut!!!! (even though I like her at 2")

Hi Nancy Casey... I used a 1" comb attachment and went with the grain - but that left her pretty long. I am going to use my 1/2" comb next. Are you laying the clipper flat on her body? I tip the clipper forward a little so the back of the blade is not touching her. And Gracie needs to be brushed out real well or the clippers will get stuck in mats. I hope this helps...

Hi Nancie: I've found a couple of things with using the combs -First - the metal combs work much better than the plastic ones. Second - I bush Koji's coat against the coat, then clip, then brush against the coat, then clip. The clipping is best done on a clean coat. I have clipped Koji before his shampoo if I want to get rid of some hair in certain areas, - but I do the final clip after his shampoo when he is 100% dry and clean.

Hi Denise...I tried to clip my Gracie a week ago and I used a 1 1/4" comb over the blade and it did nothing but get tangled in her fur. She has the same wavy coat like Abby. I watched the DVD and it said to keep the coat longer to shave in the direction of the growth. Against the growth it cuts shorter. Nothing at all happened when I went with the growth. It just flatened down. When I tried going against the growth the hair would get tangled up in the comb and blade and I would have to turn it off and gently pull it out of the teeth. So, is there a trick or what am I doing wrong? thanks...Abby's home cut looks great!!
