I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

Sadly I can't use any bulbs. I am impressed that Blake is in a college preschool :-)

If any of you need bulbs and still have time to plant in your area before the ground is frozen, my son's preschool is doing a bulb fundraiser.  Check out the selection here:  http://groups.dutchmillbulbs.com/wallawallacomcollegepreschool.php

Anne, I checked with my BIL who farms 20 rural acres growing the same types of veggies we have in our garden. I asked him how he keeps the deer out and he said they didn't have a problem with them. It seems in Oregon the deer have discovered that the safest place with the best food is the suburbs!

Ricki and Mary Ann, You both experienced what I feared when I moved from the city to the country.  I spent a lot of time studying deer proofing (before the internet-very time consuming).  The best deer proofing is a fence at least 7' high.  Fortunately for us, we have had very little damage in 20+ years and no fencing.  We find deer tracks in the garden from time to time but they only nibbled on the kale once.  The county I live in is very rural with a high deer population.  Deer control comes every November in the form of deer hunting season.  I hate it but it is a necessary evil.  A farmer can lose $20,000 to $30,000 in crop loss.

Thanks F, I'm hoping the flowering plants will return in the Spring.  The weather is mild enough here that many of our vegetables winter over and get new growth in the Spring too. So we'll have to see what happens.  No talk about deer control here yet but I can see how it could become a topic of interest!

So sad Ricki and Maryann. My deer fence has been a blessing. The town has been debating deer control for a couple of years.

Maryann, I'm learning that the deer didn't get the memo about what is and is not deer resistant!  So far the survivors are the sword ferns, brunnera, lungwort and coleus.  That's about it. So sorry about your bougainvillea- 5 out of 50-ouch!They are beautiful and apparently delicious too!

I swear that buck stopped eating and posed for the camera when he saw me! He was not at all intimated by me! DH just said that the Swiss chard is GONE.  The plants were about 2 feet high and in full leaf and now they are 2 inch sticks.

Great shot, beautiful buck and how thoughtful of you to feed him!  I feel for you!!

I live with deer also.  Las year I (had) planted 50 10 gallon bougainvillea - very deer resistant.  They were planted to stabilize the hillside.  I have 5 left  - those are too close to the dog run I think and are therefore more "deer resistant".  I would post a photo but it is dark and even in daylight there is very little left to photograph!

We're in the middle of a fence replacement right now-you know, the part where  your old fence is down but the new one isn't up yet?  Our yard and garden are disappearing!  So far the deer have taken out the honeysuckle, clematis, columbine, violet and coreopsis.  We covered the veggie garden with floating row covers but it was a joke! They tore open the lightweight covers and dug under the heavy ones. They then decimated the Swiss Chard (their favorite), Italian Kale, cucumbers, carrot tops, strawberry plants and raspberry plants. Sigh. :(  DH put up barriers to stop them in the veggie area but they just laughed at them. Here's one marauder I caught in the act!
