Garden Group

I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

Wouldn't it be nice if I got emails about new discussions in my own groups?

It is true that foxgloves are poisonous as are many plants. But my dogs have never gone near these plants even though they could. I'd say that they can tell but we did recently have a dog on DK that became very ill from eating a plant. There are lists on these plants in the Danger Group.

Thanks Jodi and Stella!   When we planted our foxgloves several years ago, we knew they were toxic, so we had them at the side of our house and surrounded with a tomato tower . So we will have to stake around the Foxgloves heavily this time, or fence around it, i guess?

Be careful if your dogs eat plants, foxgloves are very toxic!

Thank You!  I can't wait to add foxgloves to our back yard, when spring gets here.

My foxgloves reseed. The plants actually take 2 years to flower so you may have some that seeded themselves. If you want to collect seed you do have to wait till the seed pods form and mature. There are lots of tiny seeds in them. I just sprinkle them around. You can also get small offshoot plants around the old plants. Despite how tiny the seeds are, and you can buy them, they do grow relatively easily.

I've planted foxgloves over 3 years ago and they got tall and were soo lovely! But i know that they don't come back the 2nd year unless you collect seeds and replant.  So, i laid out the dried out flower, which i thought had seeds in but I guess i should've waited till it formed seeds before i cut it off??     Has anyone here had success with foxgloves reseeding  ? Thank you!

Thank you F Parker, Calla & Luca!

I won't add more dirt.  And i will trim hedges top where its brown & dead. I'm hoping it will grow out more at the sides and connect to form a hedge this year or next!  :) We planted them 3-4 yrs ago.

I would not add dirt. The peonies know what they are doing and more shoots may come out later. Now is a good tome to trim dead growth. You don't want to trim too much growth from spring bloomers before they bloom thought.

I'm noticing a litte bit of the shoots of my Peonies base coming out. But it's still cold here in Seattle and i'm wondering if i should pour more dirt at the base, because last year  we had more shoots coming out.

Also, is it too early to start trimming old  dead growth of hedges?
