Garden Group

I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

Comment lead to confusion as to whom is being addressed and also to loss of information. So do start discussions if you want any feedback or if you might be inviting discussion.

Nancie, here are some photos of hostas:

(This is not my garden, but I do have some spectacular hostas.)

The lilacs comment was for Nancie, I wonder if they have those in CA. I have a lot of them, but they are so old and leggy the blooms are practically on the roof. So much was neglectes here for so long.
I had a landscape architect who chose the "Techny" type of arbor vitae, and there were eight of them planted in the side yard. But there is something wrong with them, I would call it "over-budding", but when I've tried doing a search for this particular problem, nothing comes up, so clearly that's not the right term. I'm going to try to get some photos today to show you the problem. They've also had bag worms (1st year) and spider mites (last year). One died and had to be replaced. First they told me to water them a lot, then they said too much water killed the one. Bottom line, they aren't growing at all that I can see, and they were a big investment. So these darned arbor vitae need their own discussion, lol.

Karen, Here are my arborvitae after this last snowstorm. They've actually straightened up a lot already , some were bent in two. By summer I hope they'll be upright and become a full screen again. I used to be unable to see my neighbor.

You don't have hostas. No wonder you don't have deer. They like them for all meals and dessert. I'd show you mine but they are not up yet. Here's some:

I love lilacs but they are not evergreen, get tall and really wouldn't make a great screen I think.

Lilacs?

Yep, we have fuscias and some people grow them as a shrub. Mostly you see them in hanging baskets in patios.
