Garden Group

I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

We have hydrangeas here but I don't know what hostas are. Peonies NO! They are one of my most favorite flower and we can't grow them here. My son's wedding was in Woodstock, VT in June (6 years ago) and the entire reception was nothing but peonies and then we took them off the tables and broke them up and used the petals instead of rice for throwing. Sometimes CostCo will have them for a few weeks but they are shipped in. I would love to be able to grow them!!!!!

They must have peonies, hostas, and hydrangeas in California, right? Me too!

Thalie, like her big sister, like most vegetables and fruits. They regularly get sweet potatoes, carrots, asparagus, beans, apples, pears, berries and sometime bananas. I will like to plant a section of our vegetable garden just for them.

Oh but there are lots of other Californians who I hope will join too and you guys can help, console and whatever each other. Plus here are certainly some plants and issues that are universal. Don't fuscias grow into lovely bushes where you are? Anyway, welcome.

This sounds like a fun group but I doubt I will have much advise to share. Since I live in California we have totally different plants than you do back there (meaning the East Coast and anywhere in between...ha ha). I will chime in when I can though. We have had nice weather too so I spent all last week pruning and some of the bushes were 34 years old and were always topped but never had the dead wood removed. You should see my arms. They are a bloody mess! Now I need to come up with some new fast growing shrubs to plant in those "way back" areas to minimize the dirt that Gracie and all her friends step in.

Good. We'll all try to help.

I am going to start a discussion with photos when I get a chance. I did have several good sized ( 5-6 ft) arbor vitae put in along my side yard, (I'll say they're pricey!) but I've had all kinds of problems with them. I need to take photos to explain what I mean, and then I'll start a discussion.

Thanks both for the happy garden wishes and offer of advice. I am going to start a discussion on natural, organic and/or earth friendly products since I would like i to be someplace people can add, review and discuss. Discussions are generally easier to follow than these comments. Thank your husband in advance for any advice he can share. I too garden much less since I have doodles. Believe it or not we had weather nice enough this weekend to prune and do some cleanup. Is this global warming?

I'm not sure Lynne if you were answering Karen but I think for year round privacy on a corner evergreen shrubs would do better. Iplanted some arborvitae near my kitchen which do a great job but they do get beaten up by the snow , which would be a problem in Chicago. Some evergreens also grow quite large and I don't know the size of the area you want to screen There are narrower shrubs that have come out in the hooy and junper family but to get larger ones is pricey. For that sort of thing you can look at Musser Froest.

I am doing a new flower bed in our front yard this year and my husband has a vegetable garden every summer. We are building a mini fence around the garden this year to keep Timbow out. :) I'll post pictures as soon as I have some to take.
:-)
