Rich and Sandy,
Yes, I hear you. We'll be giving Oscar the same start at socialization that we gave Lucy, going to puppy romps at Schroeder's Den in Hillsboro after 10 weeks old (once a week until he reaches 6 months old), for hourly sessions with other puppies his age. Also, after 4 months he'll be coming to the Doodle Romps at Fidos (as well as occasional visits throughout the season), and of course puppy training classes. So, he'll have lots of exposure to other dogs and puppies in the formative early months.
Debb and Lucy,
They can't get much more adorable than that! Bet you can't wait!
A little advice? Like you, we adopted Joey as a little pup about this time of year...to be Abby's playmate (and ours!). The downside to raising Joey during a NW winter was that although he had a sister six months his senior to grow with, he didn't get much "face time" with other puppies or dogs. We took him to PetSmart puppy classes, but that was about it. Now he's not nearly as social as his sister. She was a "summer puppy" and spent oodles of time at the dog parks and such. Joey's a great dog for sure, but sadly doesn't have any interest in playing with other dogs. He just likes to chase the ball and chase the ball and chase the ball and... Now we wish we would have taken him to doggy daycare, etc. as much as possible.
Soooo...if you have the opportunity, make sure little Oscar has as much time making as many new friends as possible! He's a doll...enjoy!
Cute puppy, makes me anxious for ours.
Rich and Sandy, that is so cool! I've mentioned getting a treadmill before, but Tim is having none of it I (he remembers countless other exercise equipment that ended up becoming expensive clothes racks). So, we make do with playing games in the house when the weather gets too bad to go out. Surprisingly, there aren't that many days we don't get out. We both have rain gear (although I won't go out in a downpour). One BIG development this weekend is, we're getting a 2nd doodle early next month (Oscar). He'll do a lot to keep Lucy jumping and active on those indoor days. Here's a pic we took while visiting yesterday:
Joey and Abby hit the treadmill!
Well... funny you should ask... I have in front of me dates to arrange with Fidos for ongoing doodle romps once a month (with the exception of Dec., which wasn't well attended last year). I'll be calling and arranging them tomorrow (and putting out notices for this group once its set). Tim, Lucy and I haven't started going to Fidos on a regular basis yet (it has only been a couple days of rain thus far) but we usually get a 12 visit pass (12 for the price of 10) every Fall/Winter. And we end up using them all each season (we don't use the pass visits on doodle romp days, since the romps are usually $5). I did notice on Fido's website they've raised their rates from $10 (all day grass park pass - owner present) to $12. I guess everything is going up. I hope it doesn't affect the doodle romp fee. I'll know tomorrow and will pass it along.
What is everyone doing now that the rain has apparently started?
Hi Linda....
He is probably too young for Fido's right now, I THINK that they start allowing at 4 months, if I remember right. He has only had one round of vaccines so far. He was supposed to have the second set this last Monday, but he's been dealing with diahrrea since coming home and still had it, so they have put them off for a week, so this next Monday, but then, we'll only have 2 sets complete and I won't be taking him to the dog park until after his 3 set, which would be mid October. Just not willing to take a chance. I used to get the Fido's newsletter, I think that maybe I changed email addresses and I'm not getting it anymore, I'll have to go to the website and set up with the new email. I know that there is a indoor dog park in Beaverton as well, or at least there used to be.
I work full time even tho I work from home, so would likely need to be on a weekend. But, based on his incomplete vaccine issue, it'll probably be a few weeks before we can all get together, unfortunately. Dang it!!!
As for Vancouver, there are several dog parks, but only a couple that I really like.
Hopefully we won't be seeing rain for awhile yet....I know that's pushing the "wish button". :-)
Let's keep in touch, and we'll get together as woon as he's good to go!!!
Rita
Hi Rita,
I think your pup would be to young to go to Fido's. They require the kennel cough vaccine which is not always given. It depends on what your dog is doing.(going to doggy day care) Do we need to go to a fenced park? Has he been to a dog park yet? Did you get the Fido's news letter or should I forward it to you.
When did you have in mind? During the week, Sat. or Sun. I work from home so it's usually easy to get away. Give me some suggestions for places in Vancouver.
Charity's favorite game is fetch the ball. We play every day.
Let's get together before it starts raining!
Linda
Hi Linda.....
I am in Vancouver....coming down towards SW is no issue. We will need to wait until Faz is vaccinated enough to get out and about. His second set is set for the 24th of Sept. Fidos, I believe, requires full vaccine, and he probably will need to be either 4 or 5 months old to get in....can't quite remember what their guidelines are, it's been awhile since I looked. Or....there is always the option of one of the dog parks out that way - or if you want to come up this way, we have some nice dog parks as well. Let me know what you think. I have a friend up here who has a 12 month old Labradoodle that would probably be interested in getting together as well.
Thanks
Rita
