Jenny, don't feel bad. What I've learned so far that "MY" Cooper being 13 months is he will not die of hunger. That's for sure. The food group folks taught me that you put the food down for 20 minutes max. If he doesn't eat it, you yank it off until the next feeding. After about 3 days of this exercise, he started eating right away. But do be careful of the habits of feeding him table scrap around his meal time. He might be delaying his eating to see what else he can get off the table. By training him to eat right away, you'll also know if he's sick when he doesn't finish his bowl quickly. You might also consider feeding him twice a day only...but you should absolutely find out the feeding measurements. Maybe you're over feeding him and that's why he's not finishing his bowl?
Regarding the sleeping...I'm envious of you. It took me a lot longer than a month to get him to sleep for most of the night. But he still starts moving and whining around 6AM...and he automatically wakes up if anyone moves next to his pen where he sleeps. So we too can't go downstairs before he's awake or else the day starts for everyone :).
Oh and all those people who are in love with their puppy the minute they get him/her...I don't understand. I felt that I was in hell for the first 4 weeks. So I'm envious of them too :)
Thanks. I'm starting to wonder if it's the food bowl. lol. He'll eat and then stop to look at me. If I feed him one at a time, it might get him to eat more. Or if I make it a game...line it up on his mat, then he'll eat it. Gosh, I really do think I'm starting a bad habit. Just want him to eat. I tried looking on the bag but didn't see serving size. I'll look into it some more. No, I have not ventured out with pumpkin or sweet potato yet.
Really, I am just getting used to having a puppy around. I hate to admit this, but I know I've searched this forum and came across someone who felt the same way. We put a deposit for our puppy back in October. Looked forward to it every single day since then. Bought everything for the puppy and thought I was ALL ready. Little did I know, I wasn't mentally ready. I had my doubts the first three days and wanted badly to talk to someone but I never got a chance to join the forum. I felt guilty for feeling the way I felt but I had no way to stop it. I was having post partum depression! LOL!
I'm ok now though...still trying to adjust but I'm thankful to have one that sleeps well! Thank you again for listening!
I should add that Angus eats everything we give him and also many things we don't give him that he finds around the house or on the ground. He is a bit of a scavenger, so we have to watch him like a hawk. We did start mixing a spoonful of pumpkin into his food, which he loves - have you tried pumpkin or sweet potato?
No problem! We have always given Angus the recommended amounts of food on the packaging based on his weight/age and he ate (and continues to eat) whatever we give him. Angus is not a picky eater, but if you look in the Food Group you will learn that many Doodles are picky eaters...it's a common discussion topic. We had a similar problem with our standard poodle we had for 15 years... if you're concerned about it you can search the Food Group for additional insights or post a discussion there - people may have more thoughts based on their picky pups. I would say make sure you decrease the amounts of treats between meals, but maybe your puppy just isn't a big eater? Or is still transitioning into the routine at your house?
Thanks for the response Laura.
Did your puppy eat a lot when you first got him? Cooper doesn't eat much for each sitting. I give him breakfast at 6, lunch at 12, and dinner at 6. Sometimes he'll finish what I give him but rarely. He doesn't seem to have a big appetite. He does go poo three times a day. I give him about a quarter cup. He was on Canadae from the breeder and I am transitioning him to Orijen.
We got our puppy around 10 weeks and he did not sleep through the night until about a month after we had him ... meaning he slept from about 10:30pm - 5:30 am. Now at almost 8 months he sleeps from about 9:30/10 - 7:30/8 ...
Hi! I have a question regarding sleeping hours. My puppy is on his 10th week and he is sleeping from about 9:45 to 5:30 p.m. We had him for a week already. Can you please tell me about what age do they start wanting to sleep more? It would be nice when he can sleep from 10p.m. to 7 a.m. It would give me more time to tend to my 10 year old boys. Thanks!
What a handsome dude :) He sounds like one lucky guy.
