How do I stop my puppy from Mouthing/Biting/Nipping? I agree with Kate. The number I've heard the most is 18 months. You need to be sure all their growth is completed so you don't mess up their joints.
Most vets will tell you to wait until a year. Some will say 8 months. Some will say 12 months. Some will say 18 months. Some won't advise ever running with the dog on flat surfaces. I've seen so many dogs with horrible hips and elbows due to being over-exercised as pups, so I err on the side of caution and won't start with Tenley until he's 18 months.
I'm sure I can ask my VET this but when can I start taking my doodle running (he enjoys long walks already and does fairly well on the leash).
I second all of Minga & Malu & Costa points! This puppy stuff is HARD and frustrating.....I've raised and bred Golden Retrievers for years and even I can get frustrated, I can only imagine what a "newbie" would do! But like mentioned...key is patience, commitment to training and consistency. Training doesn't last for just a few minutes a day...every opportunity spent with your puppy is a training moment. It pays off believe me!
I second the key points by Minga & Malu & Costa. That is exactly what I did with my doodle, yes, you are spending the majority of your time outside. The only thing I failed at was pottying in the same spot, this is very important! I didn't and now every time I take her outside we are going on mini walks until she finds a good spot, very frustrating.
Well, after reading everybody else's potty training woes, I am pleased to say that we have been having a breezy potty training time. Both my doodles got an early start with their breeder and I got them each at 8 weeks. Malu was a breeze and now Costa is too. I truly feel the pain of everyone who is struggling!
Key points (IMO): Consistency. Potty after every nap, meal, upon exiting the crate, immediately before going in the crate, and every hour while awake. We go to the same spot in the yard each time. I walk out with him (yes, even at 2 am, or 4 am, or whenever) and have a little puppy party afterwards, lots of praise and petting (I do not do treats for potty, reward is praise, petting and getting to return inside!).
Costa is 9 weeks. He knows exactly what to do outside, goes straight to potty first thing. He has asked to go out once or twice so far, but it has just been a week. He is a smart doodle (shocking!).
Good luck to everyone with a young Doodle and I will try to give my best advice to help!
Picked up our new Multigen ALD puppy today! A very busy afternoon ensued! Great first day.
Thanks!
