OOPs, hit add before I was done. Doodles are not a pure breed so their look, size, care, activity levels are not consistent. You need to be ready to roll with the punches of most likely having an active dog of unexpected size with unexpected coat care that may or may not shed.  Multigenerational ALD's are more consistent and closer to looking and acting like their parents.

I am late to the party, but each person/family needs to get a dog that is right for them and their situation. I have both rescues and breeder bought doodles and a pure breed dog (2nd of that breed).  You purchase so that you have a 'history.' This is especially important for families with young children, oldsters, special needs. Purchasing a pure breed also gives the buyer (you) control  because you pretty much know what your dog will look like and how big he will be as well as a general temperament.  Rescuing is great - you get to save a life.  True rescuing makes NO mention of breed or sex.   Most of us fsll somewhere in between.  We might want to rescue, but we also have something in mind.  We want the dog to fit into our family. Rescues are not especially more work than purchasing, just different skill sets needed.

I was thinking " older", but she got a 13 week old, so that couldn't be it.

I was wondering that, too. Must be golden.

What is a folder doodle? Or is it a typo?
Comment by Marcey Peyser Friedman on September 14, 2014 at 5:23am
I knew I wanted a folder doodle but did not know where to find one. A friend of mine volunteers at a rescue called Delaware Valley golden retriever rescue so I called them to see if they knew a local breeder. Two weeks later I called back to find out they had just rescued 21 golden doodle puppies from a Lancaster puppy mill that was being closed by the state. I could not believe how fortunate we were. The next day we drove up and met our beautiful little girl. I felt that it was our fate. She was 13 weeks old. The puppies all found great homes and every year we have a doodle reunion. It was the first time this golden retriever only rescue had rescued golden doodles and ever since they have continued to rescue both breeds.
If anyone is looking to rescue a golden doodle they will often have one available. They are located in Rheinhold Pennsylvania and have a great web site. You can find them under DVGRR. They are also on Facebook. Hope this helps you if you are looking to rescue a golden doodle. They are a fabulous rescue and will work with the dogs so they are ready for a family both in training and medically.

I have always been a rescue dog type person.

The idea of not going that route went so against my grain. As I was being rejected by a few rescue people I met a goldendoodle that I fell in love with. When I found out there was a second litter with the same parents I still didn't jump on board. But then the litter was way bigger than expected and there were puppies available and I found that out on my birthday. It just felt like it was meant to be.

I still struggled with the supposed reaction I would get. I had two camps against me not just one. A. I'm not getting a rescue. B. I'm not getting a purebred dog but buying an expensive "mutt".

But now I love her and I don't care anymore. She is a great dog.

I brought her in to the groomers just this past week. There was an older, very outspoken woman there dropping her dog off at the same time. She asked me if it was one of those expensive designer dogs. I said yes, she's a goldendoodle. I was waiting for a tongue lashing because she seemed like she had it in her. But she paused and said, "well, I think you got a good one."
