I felt a lot of judgement, like others, when telling people I was getting a puppy who wasn't a rescue. With those who were close to me, I'd tell them I spent 9 months searching rescues for a doodle for our allergic family but it seemed like no one "returns" these great dogs. Sometimes I just ignored the comments. When I felt guilt, I made donations to charity. When I feel feisty, I bite my lip so as not to snap back, "And why did you choose to birth your own children rather than adopting an orphan?!?" Yikes. Maybe when Charlie is a bit older I'll mellow too. ;-)
Thank you for all the feedback and support. I have had rescues in the past [and probably will in the future]. I've researched carefully and hope I have chosen well. If anyone has any information about High Mesa Doodles please email me off-list.
It really helps to hear that most of you have only heard positive things from people when they meet your dog. I can hardly wait for my doodle...
Shoney and Deb - We are definitely dog lovers and have done it all - rescue, foster, designer dogs, rehome, etc. My husband says that rescuing a dog is like adopting a child from juvenile hall. Yes, they definitely need to be rescued, but are you the one to do it. Totally depends on your situation and what you want. I have no problem at all paying a lot of money to a good breeder to get exactly what I want, but paying a lot of money (or even a little money) to a puppy mill or backyard breeder is not an intelligent thing to be doing. Be smart when you are choosing your dog.
My family donates plenty of money to shelters every year and our cats are all from shelters. For a family of people with dog allergies, a doodle is the way to go.
I mean no disrespect to your friend, but she's being quite a bully. Why does she care about what decision is best for your family? But that's just me being protective of our decision to get a mini golden doodle. Maybe if she had one, she wouldn't even be asking the question!! : )
They're just the best. I love my pup and I'm so glad we invested the money to go to a reputable breeder and get a dog that's perfect for our family with young children. And the no-shed factor...priceless!
I had always heard and read this before we got Callie but since we have gotten her no one has every said anything to me. I think her cuteness gets them before they can talk :D
I agree with Deb 'n Yarrow and Shiloh - "I think it's hypocritical for any devout dog lover to hold a prejudice against any dog no matter where it came from. That's a "dog lover" with exceptions and conditional love." AMEN!
