Gail, I have a white doodle too...well, more like cream colored.  He does not show any more food mess from the Raw Meaty Bones diet I feed him than he did from the combination of canned & kibble, or processed raw, or whatever that I fed him before.  If I feel his mustache or beard is a little messy (rarely), I give him a little wash/wipe with a paper towel and a light solution of water and white vinegar.  His feet and legs never are dirty.

You are right that you should not feed kibble and raw together.  They digest at different speeds.  The reason dogs don't get sick from the bacteria in raw food is because it goes through their digestive tract really quickly, not giving the germs time to do anything.  Kibble slows the process down and so, in combination with raw, can actually be unhealthy for the dog.

I feed my dog inside, on a towel.  It took him about one feeding, maybe two, to figure out that he had to keep his food on the towel.  I keep wipes nearby in case he misses the edge of the towel, which he does occasionally, but overall, he is very neat.  I have three old towels that I circulate -- I wash them in very hot water and the occasional bleach to clean them.  Not difficult at all.

I chose to feed my dog the Raw Meaty Bones diet because it seemed the healthiest and most natural, plus it provides benefits for his teeth, gums, digestive tract, and overall sense of wellbeing.  You can read about it here: http://www.rawmeatybones.com/  In addition, there's a support group for Raw Meaty Bones on Yahoo.

If you are very interested in switching over, check out my blog posts.  I know most of us who feed completely raw are happy to support you in any way we can.

I joined this group to learn more about raw feeding and to ask some questions.  I hope these questions don't sound silly...but I seriously need to know how this works. Doesn't the raw meat get all embedded in the doodles hair around the mouth and legs and paws when they eat?  (I have a white doodle and I shudder to think what she would look like after a meal.) Do you feed your dogs inside?  I am looking at Honest Kitchen foods (because of the ease of prep) but I don't know how they can be called raw when it really isn't.  I read some of the threads in this group about feeding a combo of raw and kibble and saw that it is not a good idea...but is it better than not feeding raw at all?  I am very interested and would appreciate any advice.

Those who follow Susan Thixton (www.truthaboutpetfood.com) know about the AVMA proposed policy statement cautioning about "dangers" of raw fed dogs.  See "the domino effect" at TAPF blog.  Susan is going to the AVMA meeting to try to help AVMA understand that their policy is silly!  One of the TAPF friends who is a vet is willing to go with Susan but needs $$ getting to meetings.  This is an issue that will ultimately impact all of us.  I am posting Susan's message below.  Please help if you can!

MESSAGE FROM SUSAN:

Dr. Jean Hofve, Mollie Morrissette and myself have spent hours (and hours) on phone conversations over the last several days - all trying to figure out what can be done to wake up the AVMA regarding the absurdity of their proposed policy against the feeding of raw meat pet foods (along with jerky treat concerns and various other serious pet food issues).  We have things working in the background (more hopefully soon) but we all felt very strongly that more of a consumer presence needs to be at the upcoming AAFCO meeting (August 4-6 Indianapolis, Indiana) than only me.

Mollie is unable to attend this meeting.  Dr. Jean can attend, but she can't afford this on her own.  Dr. Jean lives on disability and with the sharp rise in admission to the meeting she just couldn't make this happen on her own.

Thus, Dr. Jean and I are asking - if you can help - please do.  Dr. Jean has established a 'Chip-In' fund - you can view that here:  http://littlebigcat.chipin.com/send-dr-jean-to-aafco-meeting  If you cannot afford to Chip-In, please share this plea so that we can raise the funds needed to get her to the meeting.

By the way, it was Dr. Hofve's AAFCO experience that got myself and her a seat at the table of the Pet Food Committee and the Ingredient Definitions Committee at the January 2012 AAFCO meeting.  We really do need her there at this meeting too.  I hope you can help.

Lifes Abundance is an ok food, but very expensive due to the tiered commission people get for selling it. Theres lots of recommended brands that are better and cheaper in the food group

I give fish oil supplement too. Grizzly brand salmon oil - Chewie loves it and licks every last drop from the tray.

For fish oil and omegas, I add sardines (no added salt, packed in water) to Buddy's raw food.

Offal or organ meat should make up about 5% of their diet; liver, kidney, heart etc. Feeding raw is great but does require work and knowledge. We have to supplement what isn't there. My girls have never tasted kibble but I keep it in case of emergency/disaster and donate it to a shelter when it nears its expiration date, then replace it. Currently I recommend Life's Abundance.

Organic meat is always best and would cut down on the toxins in the organ meats.

@ Richard-it's amazing what we will do for our dogs! LOL!

Comment by Melanie and Girls on January 23, 2012 at 4:41pm

Considering that's what my Dr. tells me about humans eating "filter" organs, we adopt the same policy with the dogs. Fortunately for me, our dogs don't like organ meat, so I get off easy :)

Comment by Trudy Harlow on January 23, 2012 at 3:49pm

I have to say that my vet has cautioned about feeding too much liver, raw or not, because that organ cleanses and can store toxins that then would be consumed in quantity by the dog.  I don't know if this actually is true, but am passing it along.
