QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups. Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.
I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

I have a 12 week old ALD "grand dog" that visits frequently. Oliver is 8 and tolerates the puppy play fine with no issues at all. Ivy on the other hand was a bit stand offish (as she is with all…Continue

Wrangler completed basic puppy class a couple of months go. He’s a very big puppy (55 pounds at 6 months) and it’s time to get serious about training. Nobody like jumping dogs, etc. — especially…Continue

Agreed, Adina. Training is continuous. Maya and Pierson are always learning new things. Fun trick training is regularly mixed in with reinforcing obedience training. Because we always spend at least three minutes almost every day with some sort of obedience or tricks, teaching them new things is so much easier. There are still some training challenges. Maya can be overly excited on walks and Pierson has leash reactive issues. But because I know how they learn best and they know what to expect from me, we continue to make progress.
Well said, Adina.
Agreed! We do no training in puppy class just learn and play! Although I tend to step out when all the dogs are playing sometimes and use it as distraction training and go through all the commands I can think of. I go through every command a couple times a day in various spots. As much as I would love to blame Cally to make me look better it is not her fault it is mine for not having control!
I so agree.
I think that people look at training as 'done' once the 'learning' is done. The dog learns what 'sit' means, learns what 'down' means, etc. As a puppy they learn fast. But then doesn't actually DO it once it hits the teenage period and that refusal is chalked up to 'excitement' and other excuses. "Oh he KNOWS what to do, he's just stubborn/excited/loves people." The dog is blamed.
When in reality, the person never really finished the training...he only did 'teaching' of the word meaning and how it's accomplished. But training is about making that stuff reliable on first command. I really wish they'd call puppy classes "socialization classes" instead of 'training'. Kind of like the way preschool is really about playing and learning non-academic stuff.
Yes, Ricki....I agree. There doesn't seem to be much interest in training these days. My trainer said that people seem to want a puppy class and then they decide they're finished....until they come back when the dog is older and out of control....then they want a "quick fix".
I can't help but notice the huge difference in the number of views on these dog training videos compared to an average music video...sad commentary.
Sue let me know how it goes.
I like this method of teaching impulse control and that play time has a beginning and an end....great for puppies.
