Thanks for the great ideas! She loves riding in the car around town, but that's a good idea to take her on some longer trips. We're going out of town this weekend, so maybe we'll bring her with us and board her once we get where we're going. We have a Durango and we can put down the back seat, so she'll have plenty of room to stretch out. My only concern is her energy right now, we take her for long walks every day and she's still got so much of it! Thanks again for all of the advice! I'll have to let you know how it goes :).

Our girls are great in the car. We have taken them everywhere with us since they were 6 weeks old. I started just taking them in a big ole rubber maid tub and as they got a little bigger the tub got a little bigger. That way where ever we went I could just take them in the tub (i.e., if we went to Lowes I just picked up the tub and set it in the cart, or if we went to someones home I didn't have to worry that they would potty on their floor). They graduated from the tubs to seatbelt harnesses. Now I just buckle them in and they are asleep by the time we get out of the driveway. If we stop somewhere they will normally pop their heads up but as soon as we start up they are back asleep. The longest trip we have taken so far is from Ohio to Alabama and they slept the entire way. I normally put a toy or 2 in for long trips, but I've never seen them play with it, they just sleep. We normally stop every couple hours for them to potty and I of course pack a "doggie bag" with treats and water etc to have available on the road. We also just upgraded vehicles with them in mind. We got a new Honda Van thinking they would love all the space to stretch out in the back with the seats all down. We even took them to the dealer prior to buying to make sure they could jump in. They both jumped right in and layed down, but after we bought the van for some reason Lucy will not jump up in the back of the van. They both prefer the seats up and to get to lay on the back seat and to come and go from the side doors! Go figure! Works for me and is easier and roomier than the car so still happy we switched. Now when Mamaw comes with us she doesn't have to sit in the backseat covered with a Doodle on her lap. (Although I don't think she minded).

I'd say take her out for car trips as much as possible for as long as possible. We were traveling from the time ours was 8 weeks old, so long days on the road was all he ever knew. he will potty on any surface that we happen to stop at due to all the different places we've explosed him to, so that could be something to practice if she only goes in one area of the yard on one type of surface. We found he woudl go to the door to let us know when he needed to potty, but we were traveling in a 40' RV so it was obvious when he went to the front door. It was a little difficult to explain to him that we couldn't open the door to let him out when we are going 70 MPH. But he did learn to wait. If we were in a car all day, he would start getting figgety and walking up and down the back seat, so you'll be able to tell when he needs to go. It's usually a lot less tha it is for the drivers. some chew toys and treats to space out during the trip is good distractions and rewards for being such a good girl. Most dogs who I;ve met that travel seem to just sleep as soon as they get in the car. Especially if they are exposed to it often.

What a great group. Our 8 week old puppy is a great traveler right now, we are crossing our fingers she stays that way. She did so well coming home from the breeder, then the next day we took her to the Jersey shore for a few nights. We have a trip planned to Lake Placid in the next few weeks. She loves chasing leaves so the falling leaves in upstate New York I am sure will be her favorite part! We rented a pet friendly house through VRBO.com. I was amazed at how many places are available and have crates & dog runs.

Our doods are great travelers, in fact they love to go anywhere. We travel by car, and I actually bought my new car with them in mind. I had a little sporty car and Hondo would ride in it with me, but when we got our second (large) doodle, I decided another car was in order. When Groucho Too was a puppy, he had a large crate in the back of the car and we made the back into their own little traveling kennel. Since we spend a lot of time at the beach, we put in a plastic bed liner (for a pickup truck) and then gates behind the second row of seats and on the sides (to protect seatbelts). Groucho outgrew the crate and the need to chew on things and now we just have the gate behind the backseat. We also have a memory foam pad that fits their area for longer trips. When they see the memory foam go into the car, they know we are going someplace further from home than the beach! We have driven to Oregon and Arizona several times with them. They are so well behaved that everyone loves their company. When we do stay in a hotel, we check ahead to see if the hotels allow pets and we stop at rest stops every few hours for them to have a little stretch. I don't like to travel for more than 5 or 6 hours a day, and that is just fine with them. It is much easier traveling with dogs than it ever way with kids, and (I think) people are more excited to see them than they are to see kids. Maybe my own prejudice!

We are three weeks into our winter travels with Maizy. She has adapted very well to our long drive from Alaska to Arizona. We have spent a week in a condo complex, discovered a dog park very close by, and bought a new camper van. As long as she has a few of her favorite toys, and us, she seems to be doing fine. We are changing some of our plans based on the hot temperatures here. I"ll be looking for romps and dog parks along our travels throughout the West, so keep your eyes open for the van with the Alaska plates and bikes hanging off it...with a doodle in the window.

Some dogs are good travelers from the beginning and some need to work up to it and some, sadly, never become good travelers. My opinion is to put them in your vehicle and drive with them. Of the dogs we have had and travelled with (10 dogs over the years) only one hates traveling and shakes and whimpers the whole time no matter what we have done. One other got a little car sick at first and outgrew it and the others have all been fine. Puppies need potty breaks more than older dogs (duh!) and are more lively. We mostly travel by RV but even in a car it has been fine.

Long way off, but we are taking both dogs to the beach for Thanksgiving (my inlaws live there!). Peri has only been on short rides at this point and is 6 months old next week. Any advice on how to warm her up to a 9 hour drive? Taquito the chihuahua does just fine, but must be in his crate to keep him from getting carsick.

Congratulations. Traveling with animals can be lots of fun when things go so well. I am glad you and Chevy are off to such a great start. You can brag here, we like it.
