Our doodles are so smart. How about if we just tell them to quit the barking or else????  :-}

The only thing I might leave in the crate with Lucy would be a treat.  She has torn up beds, toys of all kinds, anything she can get a hold of thru the crate.  I once left my reuseable grocery sacks next to Lucys crate.  I had to run out for about 30 min and when I returned, my sacks were chewed up and the canned goods were all over the floor....sigh  When we first got her I did try a soft crate and she ripped it pieces. Back to the barking, Lucy only barks when she is left in the crate and we are gone, so that is why I'm considering the anti bark collar.  I'm hoping it will only need to be used a few times.

WOW Nancy, you have really tried a ton of stuff!!  I hear you on the crates.  I have turned to soft crates as you can get fold them down easily and they are not too heavy.  My girls are not in crates at night any more but the new boy is.  I use the soft crates for all the agility lessons and training lessons.  Somehow I find they feel more comforted in a smaller space.  ALTHOUGH... if they are worked up.. they could get through a soft crate I suppose.  Another thought on crates is that you could put 2 in one if the crate were larger.  Cover all sides except the front... like a cave.  Just fold it back up and put it under when you are done.  Might be worth a try versus not RVing or stressing about leaving them.

Your dogs are very talented!  I can just picture them removing objects in their way, and opening blinds.  Someone must have come up with some games about leaving your dog alone... I'm going to snoop around.

Our 2 older dogs are very well behaved in the camper... most people are stunned when we bring them out after we have beena way golfing all day... shocked that they were so quiet.  However, we have not introduced the new dog to the mix yet.  So I am very keen in this conversation as I may be facing the same issues.

We leave the tv, fan and anything else we can think of on when we leave them.  We close all the curtains however all of ours jump up on the front dash and move the curtains aside - we pile things up there but they just pull them off!  We don't crate any more so that is out - but we have three dogs anyway can you imagine 3 crates in an RV - not!  We have tried the ultrasonic noise deterrent box but they don't seem to really work. We are really down to an e-collar and for two reasons (cost and leaving it on when they are alone) I keep resisting following through.  I wish the ultrasonic device was strong enough to really do the job - but wish in one hand and spit in another  as the old saying goes....

Hmmm... that must be very frustrating Linda.  I imagine you have tried lots of ideas so excuse me if I am being redundant.  Have you tried any self treating toys like a kong?  Have you stuck around quietly outside for a few hours to see what really happens?  Wouldn't you love to have a spycam?  LOL

I would be careful with leaving a collar on a dog while in a crate.  I had a friend whose dog died because her collar got caught on the crate and she strangled to death.  Neither of my 2 go into a crate anymore, but when they did, I always made sure to take their collars off first.

What about one of those bark deterant noise things that emits a sound in response to a bark?

We are having the same problem with our Lucy when we leave her and Moneypenny in the crates in the RV. Lucy has anxiety issues so she can't be loose in the RV because she would tear everything up, plus pee and poop :(.  We had a lot of complaints this last trip.  I don't want to leave her at home.  So I'm seriously considering getting a no barking collar and only using it when we leave her in the crate in the RV. I leave the TV on, AC on. Curtains are closed.  I have tried behavior modification training with Luc without much success also.  She is a rescue and we are unsure what all was done to her, besides her broken leg.  She was about 10 months old when we got her.

That's too bad Nancy, barking is the RV'ers greatest fear isn't it?  When we leave the girls in our RV I leave a radio running if we are not plugged in.  Otherwise I leave the air conditioning or fan on (these are the best), or the TV running.  Just to give them white noise.  Maybe the space is too big for them and they get insecure?  I wonder if crating would change that?  I also make sure all the blinds are closed and that there are not any windows they can see out.  (I also shut off the propane tanks.)

My dogs have started barking A LOT when we are not in the RV with them - especially when someone next to us is hooking up or leaving.  This is soooo unacceptable, but we are not quite sure how to change it. When we are in the RV we can easily extinguish any  barking.
