Beckley advances to next phase of Service Dog Training

On Tuesday, Beckley advanced to the next phase of his Service Dog Training with his first vist inside of a Store (Home Depot).  Our Trainer, Nancy Dryden took Beckley for over an hour into the store and practiced his commands and getting him use to be in those type of environments.  At 18 Weeks Beckley is progressing very well in the program that is being ran by Paws4Vets.  …

A multi-sensory walk

I walk Bodi at 5 am.  Usually the only one we see is a mini-poodle who lives around the corner.  His owner is not friendly, so even though the dogs would love to great each other they don't get to. We arrived at the corner at the same time this morning.  I held back, Bodi yanked and yanked, and then we continued our walk.  A few streets up Bodi and I could see someone walking in the street towards us.  I am not afraid of people walking dogs or joggers, but this person was just walking…

Jack is growing like a weed!

Still the sweetest puppy ever!  Originally we had wanted a female-we've always had females-but after more thought I decided that I wanted a little boy this time.  We made the best decision-he is the most loving little guy.  Our females have always attached themselves to my husband-even our Yorkie.  This time Jack is totally a momma's boy and I LOVE IT!  He had a well check at the vet today and immunizations. Our vet was pretty impressed with him and said that he would take him in a minute…

OCTOBER IS ADOPT-A-DOG MONTH

According the The American Humane Association, October is Adopt-A-Dog Month.

When I was ready to accept full responsibility for a pet, another life, I never – ever thought about adoption. My ignorance to how many dogs were waiting for a good loving home is what led me to a fabricated breeder (puppy mill factory in disguise), where I met 9 week old Harley……

New puppy coming soon, new profile, & Jace

Wow! It's been a while since I posted a blog on here, but honestly things have been really quiet around the Devers household until sunday night when we finally came to sure decision that would would be adding a new doodle to our little "pack". The emotions I feel in about a 5 minute span about the new puppy [we've picked a name too, Willow], Willow, range from so excited that I feel sick, Nervous, Anxious, Upset, Happy, Sad, Confused. You name it, I've felt it.. I'm already in love with her…

GIRLS WEEKEND, NO DOODLES ALLOWED – A SUCCESS!

Planning a girls weekend and no doodles allowed is not easy, however this one turned out to be a success after all.

Harley hates to see me leave with an overnight bag. He makes it very difficult.

How would you like to pack up for a “get-away” weekend and have to see this every time you put something in the car?……

GIRLS WEEKEND, NO DOODLES ALLOWED

The fourth weekend in September is very special to me. It’s when my college girlfriends and I (we’re talking over 40 years of friendship here) come together. It’s a girls weekend…

Seeing "Dead People"????

Murph had surgery today because he's had infected anal glands that were not responding to two rounds of antibiotics.  They have been uncomfortable and even painful for him and so he "licks" which irritates the problem even further to say nothing of giving him some rather disgusting breath.  Apparently they were even worse than our Vet suspected so she had to give him more sedation than originally anticipated.  He's home and doing fine tonight, but he's totally in "la la land".  I had a…

Oh no yak!!

Ok. I read that dogs like to throw up but still gross when it happens!!! Just fed him breakfast and five minutes later he is in the dining room (of course - on nice comfy expensive rug) yaking!! Oh no !! Can't really handle that too well. Thankfully hubby still home to clean it up ( because that is something for them to do) . I hope this is not a regular thing. This is first time he has done this. Ugh!!

Correcting a naughty behavior...

Yesterday, we were at the Grand Woofstock dog event in Escondido and got two adoptions.  However, we also made some contacts with a vendor for Dick Van Patten Natural Balance Food who will get us a good discount for our rescue efforts and with a dog trainer who is willing to help us with some dogs that have behaviors which make them hard to adopt.

The first tip she gave us worked like a charm.  I will pass it along because I think that this might be good for modifying…

You say "Poodle" Like It's a Bad Word!

So many times I see people mention that they don’t want their Doodle to look like a Poodle.  I often want to say back, “then why did you pick a dog with Poodle in it?”  My two dogs, in looks, are as different as night and day.  I have never had a Poodle before, but I have had Labrador Retrievers,…

Duncan's Photo Contest

Last week I wrote that Duncan and I will be participating in this year's Paws for the Cause walk with the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Each year, Paws for the Cause has a photo contest for the dogs who are participating in the walk. I am including the link below for anyone who would like to vote for my boy's photo. You would just need to "like" his picture on the Facebook page.…

Getting better

Toby is now officially four months old. We have had him since the middle of July. It is starting to get a little better. Someone had told my husband and I that the first six months is hard with a dog, as is the last six months . He is adjusting really well and I just love him . He makes me smile or laugh even when I don't want to. I guess that is why people love their dogs. The leash walk is getting better although the first five minutes it's all about eating the leash, getting tangled in the… Continue

COCOA HAS FOUND A "FUREVER" HOME

I took our darling Cocoa on a meet and greet to a prospective adopter's home last night.  What a wonderful experience. Cocoa was a perfect lady during the entire visit.  She was friendly and animated but also mellow and undemanding.  I was so proud of Cocoa and happy for her!

This family is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, four adults ranging from a daughter in her twenties to an 80-ish grandmother who is in a wheelchair.  Cocoa came up and sniffed grandmother's hand and then put her head in her…

HDA

I am writing a blog just because I rarely do unlike someone, who shall remain nameless. Well, really more than one someone : )  And to show you all a sign that just surprised me and left me humbled. I realized that somehow it had leaked out that I am a HDA (Hopeless Doodle Addict) and a large sign was erected in recognition of that in the back of the parking lot for the building where my  office is located. I thought perhaps Adina had arranged for this and I was so flattered. It was so very…

Expecting pups any day! (But not Lyric's) UPDATE!

I have just gotten home from a trip to pick up Tapas, a lovely chocolate LD who had pups here with me a few years ago--she is now expecting 6 pups and is due sometime in the next few days. I will have them here with me for 5 weeks and then they go to the breeder's houser and I can put my feet up! Two weeks later, Lyric will be due, so I will need to get some rest!

I will keep you all posted on the birth of the litter and of course, will be happy to share pictures with my puppy loving…

Why Rescues Have Rules!

Heidi is a four month old Maltese-Poodle mix.  Her owner called Judy before the owner found Heidi at a backyard breeder.  The lady wanted to adopt a puppy from us but, she was in her eighties.  Judy suggested that a puppy might not be a good match for her.  In fact, her doctor and her vet had recommended against her getting a puppy. Judy said that if she had a family member as a back up in case physical conditions prevented her from caring for a dog, that an older dog might be a better idea.…

NATIONAL DOG WEEK 2013

This week is National Dog Week 2013.  This is it’s 85th year in fact. And I have to admit, I didn’t know much about it’s origin or it’s purpose. Here’s what I learned.

National Dog Week was founded in 1928 by Captain Will Judy, a former publisher of Dog World Magazine and a dog judge. He created National Dog Week to educate all dog owners in their responsibilities to their pets and to their communities. The origin of “man’s best friend” is alleged to have come from a closing…
