I have two dogs with seizure disorders.
Dandy a 12-year old AKC Champion Maltese has had seizures in the past.
Sasha, a 7-year old Jack Russell Terrier bites at the air which is an indication of a pre-seizure condition.
Both of these dogs are on a regular regimen of Phenobarbital.
Dandy has not experienced a seizure since we began the medication and Sasha has not had a seizure.
Both dogs have their blood levels checked by our vet every six-months when it is time to refill the prescription.
We get our prescription from our vet who calls it in to the Local COSTCO Pharmacy (which supplies some vet meds also), The price of the Phenobarbital is not cheap but, less expensive than our vet could sell it for.
All-in-all the Phenobarbital has been successful in preventing seizures in both dogs and is well worth the price.
I'll send a group message. I hope most group members have their notifications turned on so they get it. :)
Karen, it's up to you, but I think this is so important that everyone be aware of this. I don't watch TV a lot, don't even know if it would have been on the news, I did not even know about the first recall notice. I only know now because you posted this. I think it could create awareness to this issue that is so critical. Thanks again for posting this!
Debbie, do you think I should send a group message to all the members of this group?
Karen, Thank you so much for posting the link about the Phenobarb recall. I was not even aware that there was a recall. Very good to know! I am checking Toby's phenobarb's now and will also check with the pharmacy that fills our prescriptions. Hopefully this will help make everyone involved aware of this recall.
Important Recall information/massive recall on seizure meds:

I just saw this, it doesn't affect us because we are using 60mg tabs and I don't think the recall is for Canada yet.

Hi all! Our Sproodle (English Springer/Poodle) had his first seizure December 27th and we took him to the emergency vet right away. They didn't find any underlying causes and sent us home. 3 weeks later, he had 5 seizures in less than a week and he now is taking Potassium Bromine once a day. He was clear of seizures for two weeks, but just had 2 in the last couple days. We are getting his blood work check on Monday to see how the levels are of his medicine. He doesn't seem to have any side of effects from the medicine yet. Anyone else taking Potassium Bromine? Does it help? The seizures are the scariest things ever and I feel for everyone in this group!
I'm sorry to hear this Adina. I hope you will be able to easily manage them.
Well...here we are. Rosco has been having seizures since that episode many many months ago that we didn't think was a seizure. We've ruled out thyroid issues and now we are in the documentation phase. I was kind of in denial since the first couple but in the past few months it has been hard to 'deny' that they are seizures.
