Coat types

Doodles come in three main coat types. Wool, fleece and hair. If you consider a woolly wool coat to be at one end of a scale and shedding coarse hair coats to be at the other end, your doodle could have a coat anywhere in-between. Not only that...it could be a combination of more than one type. Coats can also be very curly, somewhat curly, spiral curls, wavy or quite straight.

Hint for maintaining your favourite look.

You will find lots of pictures on this site of great looking doodles. Use them to take to your groomer to show what look you like or use them to follow for home grooming.

Coat Change from Puppy to Adult
Somewhere between 8 and 12 months doodles start growing their adult coats. Matte time! Since they don't shed, you need to comb the puppy coat out. This takes quite a bit of dedication and this stage can go on for several months. If you let your puppy mat at this time and resort to shaving, you STILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM. You cannot shave it away. At some point, you must comb that puppy coat out. To make this stage easier, scissor the coat to about 2 inches in length so there is less to tangle. A seriously good way to reduce brushing is to buy a high speed blower. It produces cool air at high volume and really helps clean and untangle the coat.

Combing your doodle.
Use a steel comb. Start from one foot and brush..yes brush with a brush..the hair up. Then  start down at the foot again and brush down in layers, making sure to always get to see the skin in the area you are working on before you go on. After about and inch or two, comb where you brushed. If the comb won't go thru, start again. Work thru the whole coat in this fashion.
Make sure you hit all the areas.
inside, outside and back and front of legs
upper and lower chest
sides, back and under tail
top of head and neck all the way around
under ears, chin and face
If a wool dog is very matted, it can take 10 hours to demat. If you have a fleece coat that is in good shape, it should take an hour or less to brush and comb the whole dog thoroughly.
Worst trouble spots: in front of hind legs, armpits, under tail and neck

To Do List for regular maintenance.
1. brush and comb twice a week or when ever you feel mattes ..dampen after brushing
These things to be done every 4 to 6 weeks
2. trim hair from between eyes as required to keep it from poking into the eyes
3. shave belly
4. trim hair from around anus and on male or female parts to prevent messy mattes that can get infected from bacteria
5. clip nails
6. trim feet ...inside of feet, around toes and trim length so it just barely touches the ground.
7. trim hair above eyes so it does not obstruct sight
8. pull hair from inside ears and clean with ear cleaning solution
9. shave hair from base of ear to increase airflow into the ear

How to trim feet
You can trim feet with scissors or clippers. I prefer to use a combination of both. I first cup the dog's foot in my hand so the bottom is visible and keeping my scissors flat to the bottom of the foot, I trim all hair sticking beyond the foot. Next I take my clipper with a number 10 or 40 and trim inside between the large pad the the small toe pads. From the top of the foot looking down, I pull a hair back from toes and scissor hair from around nails and between toes. You can to this with a clipper too and make 'poodle toes'...not to be confused at all with poodle feet. You want the foot to have lots of volume from the top, but look clean underneath.

I know exactly how you feel.  Butch is 11 months old and I want to keep him long, too.  He had always been just scissor cut and kept long until his last grooming.  I let our groomer use the clippers and do the longest she could, which was one inch.  he looked great and was much more manageable.  i, too, thought i was keeping him well maintained but she told me he was matted.  he's at that age where he really puts up a fuss when i start working on him.  we live in the chicago area and he's due friday for his next spa visit.  i think we're going to go even a bit shorter this time to finish out the summer.  i've seen some really bad doodle cuts and i don't want to end up with that.  my groomer is amazing and patient.  i have had 2 strangers stop in the middle of the street in their cars to tell me how great looking he was. i overheard a teen-aged boy saying butch looked like a beanie baby, that he didn't look real.  i know 90 percent of it is in the cut!  good luck!

Trying to take deep breaths. I have a nine month old doodle.  We live in Indiana so this is summer!  I had him groomed 5 weeks ago and asked our groomer to keep it pretty long.  I love him log and curly!  But this time I was going to get it shorter than I liked to keep him comfortable and because we have been swimming in the pond.  BUT just the last two days he became matted.  I haven't seen matting before, so at first Iw as in denial.  :((  I trust the groomer. He has been groomed twice so far. She did a great job both times.  The first time asking for what I wanted, but I did not know.  The second time listening to me as I had thought about and research what I did want.  The first thing she said the morning was, "OH, he is matted".  She promised to keep him as long as she can but he will need to be short.  I know it will grow, but I am worried about sunburn.  I am dreading his return and I am afraid I will cry.  :(((  It rained here for a solid 3 days. I had to walk him in the rain many times.  She says if he wasn't well combed when he got wet, that is when the matting occurred.  :((( I feel so bad that I could have prevented it if I had brushed/combed him before each walk. :(((  I don't need advice, unless you know a good sunscreen to use on him. I just want to to share with people who would understand.

Carolyn, I LOVE Sydney's new cut.  He looks wonderful.  I think I might try that shorter look with Ned again - just not Clancy! :-}

Diane, Thank you.  Funny thing is when we first saw Sydney after his shaved back we thought he looked so strange without his long locks.  The short cut was sooo much easier to keep him groomed.

How did Hurley's grooming session go?

What is with these groomers that either act like they are listening but do what they want and not what you have clearly articulated or act like you don't know what you are taking about, etc?

Finding the right groomer has to be more challenging than finding the right vet.

Boy, I sure do appreciate before and after photos.  I have been so anxious about grooming Hadley.  I researched ALL OVER town for a couple of weeks...I was willing to drive out a distance if need be.  I found someone relatively close by and took her in.  I brought in a dozen photos of what I wanted her to do.  She looked at them and said she knew what I wanted.  Well, she only got to do her face feet and sanitary cut because Hadley threw up from nervousness.  Anyhow, she told me to bring her back next week to "finish" her up.  The problem is I can already tell she didn't follow my photos of other doodles.  The top of her head is so short, and her face was practically shaved down.  I brush Hadley every 2-3 days, she has zero matts so the groomer should be able to do what I want with no excuse.  Unfortunately, now she won't be able to because she already cut her down SOOO short on her face and head.  I am sincerely upset about it.  I have considered just taking her somewhere else to finish the cut, but the only other person I am willing to try has a 3 month wait.  He works out of a vet office.  My kids have pleaded that I learn how to  groom her myself in the future because they too were devastated.  We just wanted a "puppy" cut since she is still only 5 mos. old.  Hoping to milk the puppy look that is so sweet as long as possible.  P.S. she did this 'half-cut" 2 days before Easter, so there went my photo shoot of kids and puppy, etc...  My teen put it best.."she looks like a raccoon."     And to boot, the groomer was annoyed that I was so particular and said that I just didn't have the ability to envision what she would turn out like in the end.  Needless to say, I won't be going to her when this is over.  $80 of pure frustration.  Just venting...thanks for listening.

Sydney looks so cute. I hope Hurley looks 1/2 that good. I have been telling Hurley to be brave and no poodle cut.

Diane, Our  'Sydney' was getting mats faster them my husband could keep them out.  Sydney will be 2 years old in July.  His hair was cut down to less then 1 inch on his body where the mats were the worst.  His tail wasn't the problem so we kept it long (notice how long).  Keep Hurleys wiskers so he looks like a doodle.  Here is Sydney with his short cut.  I told the groomer to make his legs look like tree trunks and look like he was running on his toes.

Good luck tomorrow Diane. I can't believe you are getting Hurley trimmed. It may be a shock at first but I'm sure it will be so much easier for you and him. Show pics. I will do a before and after of Chopper who also is going to a new groomer tomorrow. I would have loved to keep him long but his combination fur mats way too much. I am armed with a few pictures and a doodle grooming chart which I'm sure will be ignored and I'll come home with a lovely poodle again like my profile pic from last year. /:) The lady did a very nice groom on him but it was not what we asked for.  Look at his skinny shaved legs...lol..
