Garden Group

I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

My DH's grandma use to make Dandelion wine and with the leaves she would steam them and make a hot bacon dressing to pour over them, like a spinch salad.

I happened by some plants outside Kmart, of all places, today. Of course, I had to look. I ended up buying a set of Walla Walla onions to plant in honor of OFL (our fearless leader). Spring is returning to NJ this weekend after all the flooding and I can hardly wait. I realized I have not used a hose to water since I did once last spring.

If life hands you lemons, make lemonade. But if your yard hands you dandelions make Dandelion Blossom Cake. Check out these dandelion recipes.

Nanci and Gracie Doodle Casie - I am in California also. I have declared oxalis to be a desirable ground cover in my garden. It is impossible to eradicate and coul be listed like this in one of those gorgeous garden catalogues - Oxalis - Sprightly green leaves and dainty white or yellow flowers. Spreads quickly and vigorously to cover the ground. Prefers twining around shrubs and roses and keeps down weeds. (note: may be considered invasive in some areas) LOL

There is now a California lilac, although to my eyes it does not bear much resemblence to a cold climate lilac. My dogs ate all the hostas as they came up under the tree in their part of the yard. They never came up again. I love hostas so maybe I will try again when they are a bit older.

We really do know they are weeds. The hostas I just glanced at in an on line catalog seem mainly for Zone 3-8, a few a little hotter. you are Zone 9 or 10. So you probably don't have hosta, or not many.

Dandelions are WEEDS!!! We have those in California!! The only lilac that I remember seeing was at my Aunt and Uncles ranch up in the San Diego mountains years ago. I think it needs to be rather cool doesn't 'it for them to blossom? Still checking on the hostas. They don't look familiar. Our yard is pretty much all azalea and camellia bushes, ornamental flowering pear trees, a huge magnolia tree and an even huger California live oak tree that hangs over the entire house. I do have a Sweet Pea bush that I love! Ground cover is jasmine! Then the agapanthas and that is about it! I like low maintenance and don't really like to get out in the yard to work although I do all the weeding. Amazing how the weeds grow better and faster than anything we could possibly plant and nurture!

If dandelions didn't multiply the way they do I'm sure we'd appreciate them. Yes, even though the lilacs don't last long they make the whole house smell wonderful.

Lilacs are my ALL time FAVORITES!! They don't last too long after being cut though. We have so many around here, that that's usually the flowers kids in my class bring me come spring time - those and of course.... DANDELIONS!! lol
