WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION.

I think this is an easy question. I think Maggie is tired of her food. She's been eating the same thing for a long time, and she's kind of blah on it. She's my most reluctant eater anyway. She's eating Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost Beef. She's…Continue

Riley LOVES her kibble but she is really not super motivated by any treats we've tried. We really haven't tried that many (just pure bites chicken and Zuke's minis, right now using a different Fromm kibble as treats) but we need a couple different…Continue

hi doodle friends,I have fed Ollie girl the Wellness LID Simple Salmon and Potato for over 2 years now, but recently couldn’t find anywhere the smaller bags, which I prefer. They’re more convenient, stay fresher, and we know the happy that comes…Continue

Hello all! My doodle currently eats Zignature Trout and Salmon grain free after trying Orijen for many months and him being constipated from it. He has done great on Zignature now for almost 3 yrs but my vet and many breeders I follow are now…Continue

My turn to ask for advice. :)Jasper's digestive system has gotten a little bit "off" the past few weeks. I'm chalking it up to new and different treats, and too many of them; the treats were being dispensed very liberally during the weeks leading up…Continue

Hi all, I'm a first-time puppy owner and recently got a 19 week old labradoodle named Ridge. He's the sweetest little guy and loves to play and snuggle. He's been on Life's Abundance since my parents brought him home in California at 12 weeks. He…Continue

Hi Rosalyn, Orijen makes smaller sized bags, as small as 4.5 lbs. And in fact, it's advised that you do not buy bags that contain more food than your dog will eat in a month, unless you can put some of it in freezer bags and freeze it. You also need to look at feeding amounts. Someyimes, a food that appears to be more expensive will actually cost less in the long run, as you use less and therefore buy less in an equal period of time.
If you scroll up a bit, you'll find a link to our list of recommended brands, right under the red photo.
Acana and Fromm are a bit cheaper (i think )and good foods. Check out the recommended brands list.
I see that Orijen puppy food costs $85.00 plus tax. for a 25 pound bag of food. I guess I am out of the loop since I only had to buy a 4 pound bag of Merrick for my puppy. Can anyone give other options? I know that a good quality food is important but almost $100 is a little steep.
Thank you both! The girls thank you as well. They think I'm stingy with the sweet potato, but I don't ask to share *their* dinner! Maybe just a little skin would make them feel better about the situation.
There's no harm in the skin, but give it in moderation, too much could cause diarrhea. It's VERY high in fiber.
My dogs love them, and it's good for them! The 3 of them will share the skin of a large sweet potato without causing any digestive problems.
Quick question: Sweet potato skin? Yay or nay. I've been eating lots of sweet potatoes lately and the girls get a bite. I don't eat the skin, but I don't know if it has too much fiber in it, or... Is it good for them? Thanks!
However, I would also say that it is not necessary to switch brands if a formula isn;t working for your dog...just try a different formula. Most brands have several different product lines, and within each line, several different formulas. So if a chicken formula isn't working, try a lamb formula; if a formula with grains isn;t working, try a grain-free formula, or vice-versa; if a multiple protein formula isn;t working, try a limited ingredient formula....within the same brand. No need to completely switch brands.
No, the order they are listed has nothing to do with quality. They are grouped according to the types of formulas they sell (some companies only make raw, some only make grain free, etc) but they are in no particular order in terms of "better" or "worse" quality.
Question - in the recommended foods file- are they in order of quality? Wondering because I've been thinking of switching to Farmina, but it's low on the list. I've tried others higher up (including acana/orijen, fromm, petcurean) and none have been that perfect match for my doodle that i'm looking for. Thanks!
