WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION.

Tired of the same food

I think this is an easy question. I think Maggie is tired of her food. She's been eating the same thing for a long time, and she's kind of blah on it. She's my most reluctant eater anyway. She's eating Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost Beef. She's…Continue

Your favorite high value treats?

Started by J and Riley (and Luna). Last reply by Kathy and Ruby Skye Aug 11, 2019. 24 Replies

Riley LOVES her kibble but she is really not super motivated by any treats we've tried.  We really haven't tried that many (just pure bites chicken and Zuke's minis, right now using a different Fromm kibble as treats) but we need a couple different…Continue

My turn to ask for advice. :)Jasper's digestive system has gotten a little bit "off" the past few weeks. I'm chalking it up to new and different treats, and too many of them; the treats were being dispensed very liberally during the weeks leading up…Continue

Hi all,  I'm a first-time puppy owner and recently got a 19 week old labradoodle named Ridge. He's the sweetest little guy and loves to play and snuggle. He's been on Life's Abundance since my parents brought him home in California at 12 weeks. He…Continue

Hi i just joined, so I may be not up to date. I fed IVET which is a relatively new food made in the midwest. This company also makes kosher human food. It is available only through veterinarians, not pricier than Solid Gold, which I fed my huskies for years, but pricier than grocery store brands. Contains no wheat, soy or chicken byproducts, only chicken meat. My two doodles love it. They, are not, however, choosy eaters. You can visit the IVET website. My vet told me it was approved for human consumption, but I did not see this on the website.
Just a mention, not from personal experience as I have never fed the BARF (basic raw food) diet. My puppies were both raised on the BARF diet so I talked to my vet about it. He is adamantly opposed to it. Mainly because he feels the risks to humans, particularily children, in the family is too great. If the raw food has salmonella bacteria dogs are generally not affected by it, but do excrete it and it will be left on the surface even after the poop is picked up. Also the bacteria will be in their mouths and face fur. Really, he is such a gentle man and I thought he was going to have stroke just when I mentioned that the puppies had been raised on it. Just a heads up if you are considering this diet.
One other thing. I buy the largest bag of dry kibble possible and put what fits in a Home Depot orange tight lidded bucket. The rest goes in the freezer as airtight as I can get it. That was one of things I liked about Solid Gold, it is packaged in foil over paper so it is easier to keep the air out.

Thanks for the invitation Karen, Hi everyone.

I have a pup, almost 6 mos old, and have been struggling with what food is best for her. I hope this will help me figure it out.

You guys are too funny. I am no expert. I am just a doodle mom who lost a beloved std poodle and vowed to never let that happen again. I started to research, read everything I could and now know that the old way was wrong. The commercial dog food companies had us fooled...but no more. Love all you guys.

Lynne gave me the best advice and Samantha is thrilled! She eats better than we do - home cooked, hot (warm, really), rib sticking meals every evening. She also loves that I trashed the Royal Canine kibble. What did I know? Now, she eats Whole Foods Holistic. She just adores it.

Welcome, Amy! While we're waiting for Lynne & our other experts to join us, please feel free to post any comments or questions.
