WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION.

Tired of the same food

I think this is an easy question. I think Maggie is tired of her food. She's been eating the same thing for a long time, and she's kind of blah on it. She's my most reluctant eater anyway. She's eating Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost Beef. She's…Continue

Riley LOVES her kibble but she is really not super motivated by any treats we've tried.  We really haven't tried that many (just pure bites chicken and Zuke's minis, right now using a different Fromm kibble as treats) but we need a couple different…Continue

UPDATE ON TOTW: I spoke with Diamond this morning and I have returned the TOTW food. It was, in fact, feline formula. Thanks to this group, I knew something wasn't right and I am thankful for the knowledge that is being shared by the members of this group. I am also glad that Diamond is suggesting that folks return the food, just to be safe.

Hi Dianne, this info is for you and all the other Orijen users out there. I was concerned when the WDJ didn't include Orijen in it's yearly best dog kibble food edition last month. I just received this blurb from WDJ today and I wanted to post it for everyone to see...(this is a March preview edition).....

We also failed to include one company on our “2009 Approved Dry Foods” list, whose information we had obtained and whose products we admire. Champion Petfoods Ltd., of Morinville, Alberta, makes its Orijen and Acana (high-protein, low-carb) dry dog foods in its own plant. See orijen.ca or call (780) 939-6888 for more information.

Now that is a shame that it only gets a blurb but at least WDJ made the correction. I thought you might all like to see it in writing! Thanks!

I am posting here since the info regarding TOTW is below. I contacted a friend this morning regarding this. She got back to me a short time ago and has informed me that they did talk to the company. They were told that they investigated and it was in fact cat food that became stuck in the machinery and became mixed with a 'limited' production of the dog food (it was totw cat). Though they indicate there is nothing of harm with this they encourage anyone who bought a bag to return it for an exchange or refund. Way to go Marion for paying attention, let it serve as a reminder to all of us how important this is. On the plus side I am pleased that Diamond acted on the side of caution in advising you to cease offering this food. Hope all is well!

Marion, I'm going to post this in the Commercial Foods section. Please keep us informed as to what you find out. It sounds like another product got mixed in during packaging...to me, it almost sounds like cat food.

WATCH THE KIBBLE! I just got off the phone with Diamond regarding TOTW that I have (Pacific Stream) Not all the kibble was the same...some was X shaped rather than all dark and round. The company has told me to stop giving Riley the kibble and wait to hear from quality control. Not sure if it is a problem so to be sure, they said not to pursue the transition to the food. I had been told on this group to always check the kibble and now I am glad that I did...I had only given her a small amount of the food over the past two days so I hope all will be okay. Nevertheless, check your dog's food...look to see if all kibble looks the same, smell it...you can't be too careful.

Taste of the Wild is the better of those choices, Marion

Given a choice, is there an all stages food that you all feel is the best? I am now down to Canidae, TOTW Pacific Stream, and Natural Balance Limited Ingredients, Potatoe and Duck or Sweet Potato and Fish. Any other suggestions? Riley is almost 9 months old and I don't really want to keep her on the Iams puppy or try to do another puppy when she is so close to being a year old.

Marion, many of the commercial food companies spray a coating of animal fat onto to the foods to make them desirable to dogs. The better foods rely on food and not tricks. Loose stools are common to some degree when changing foods. You can add some chicken and rice to firm her up. Read through the discussions here on the Food Group and you will get a better sense of what you want to do. TOTW is a good food. Iams is not.
Comment by Marion Carmickle on February 9, 2009 at 12:31pm
What can cause loose stools when changing dog food? Riley was changing over to Organix and then decided she wouldn't eat it anymore (we had just about gotten her to 100% Organix. In desperation, I mixed in some of her old food (Iams) and she gobbled it up.She didn't have any digestive issues with the Organix...she just doesn't like the smell or something. When we tried California Natural, her stools were runny and she couldn't tolerate it. It is not high fiber but it does have more protien than the Organix. As I search for another food, I am looking at TOTW Pacific Formula (her breeder now feeds this food to all her dogs, both puppies and adults), and Natural Balance, Duck and Potato. Pacific Stream (TOTW) has 25% Protien, 15% Fat, 3% fiber. The Duck and Potato has 21 % Protein, 10 % fat and 3% Fiber. The California Natural had less fiber, 1.5%, but higher Protein, 26%. Would it be possible that the higher protien could be the issue for Riley? She just tolerates the Iams because she likes the smell better than the Organix but we still have to add something to it to get her to eat and it isn't a good food. What do you think?
Comment by Lynne Fowler-Oodles of Doodles on February 3, 2009 at 2:13pm
Diane, are you feeding only kibble? She may need more food. If you try adding fresh cooked chicken, steamed veggies & fruits, you might be better able to tempt her and she will be healthier. You can add some of that marrow into her food or just let her chew on the raw bone with the marrow in it. Read through some of the discussions in this group and you will get a better idea of choices.
