Chevy (our 5 mo. old goldendoodle) just returned from his first road trip from Kansas City to Tampa and back after a week in Tampa. He did great! Stayed in strange hotel rooms, stopped at fast food and rest stops and was a perfect gentleman.

We stopped in Lawton Georgia going down and in Clarksville, Tennessee coming back and had no trouble finding hotels that were actually nice.

It was a fantastic that Chevy travels so well, he will have to in the future since we split our time between here and there.

I don't know that I have any great advice, just bragging I guess.

Awesome group!
We live in Raleigh, NC, and enjoy traveling with our Agnes. Anyone have recommendations for the NC Area... in particular, we're hoping to travel to Asheville this summer/fall.

While I haven't been there with a doodle, I have been here with a dog and HIGHLY recommend it, The Lazy Dog Inn in New Hampshire. http://www.lazydoginn.com/ the hosts are wonderful. Dogs sleep in your room at this B & B. There is a fenced dog area as well as a beautiful temperature controlled "kennel" if you decide to explore the area without your pet. The hosts will take your pup out to the dog yard to play with their goldens if you permit it. Did I mention your dog is also allowed in the common areas & the food is wonderful!

Our puppy Chevy is destined to be a travelling dog. We spend our summers in Kansas City and our winters in Tampa which causes us to drive 5000 miles a year just to make our two round trips a year. We also travel from those destinations frequently on vacations from retirement.

We have a 17 pound cat (Chat) that has been making this trip with us for the past 5 years so we have found hotels along the way in Tennessee and Georgia that accomodate pets.

This fall will be our first trip with Chevy although he travels around town with us now and rides very well so we don't anticipate any problem. In fact we think Chevy's present may make the trip easier since I tend to point our SUV and go, stopping infrequently. I'll make more rest stops with Chevy.

We are looking forward to taking Chevy to the dog beach in Ft. Desoto Park in Tampa. It is one of the more amazing places I've been. Imagine several hundred dogs playing together, chasing balls in the surf and not a single dispute among them. Away from the beach are fenced off leash areas based on the size of the dog, all with wash stations so you can get the salt water off your dog.

What a cool picture....I knew they made those pull behind things for kiddos, never knew they made them for doggies! Keep us informed of Maizy's adventures in the great outdoors!

Hello all, I'm glad to see this group started. Our five month old is getting used to camping in our camping van and traveling in a bicycle trailer. We are planning to head out in the fall to camp/bike for a couple of months, so I'll be interested in all the tips from experienced doodle travelers.

His hair is always so soft and we have had no issues with his skin whatsoever. We had gone to the Grooming Group to ask about his being bathed so much because at first we were shampooing and conditioning him almost everyday not knowing what the salt water would do. It seems there are two schools of thought on baths. Vet says 2-3 times a week is okay and some sites say no more than once every 2 months or so. Due mostly to the risk of drying out his skin. We use the Chris Christensen Day to Day Shampoo and conditioner and it can be used everyday if needed so is mild on the skin.
But we did start just rinsing him off and using the pool only instead of washing him so much since he smells and feels so good after being in the ocean. Kind of a "Seabreeze" scent. But skin is fine, no dryness, hot spots, itching at all.
We do have a problem with ear infections however. But it's humid and hot here as well, so we have to stay on top of cleaning the ears with the recommended medication every time he gets out of the water.
I must say that watching your dog jump over waves and body surf into shore and chase balls in the water is a joy to behold.

good tips, thanks! Does the salt water do any (good or harm) to their skin...that you have noticed?
