Hi food fans. I have been tardy on posting this so here we are. Back in November we got rid of our chest freezer for an upright, so totally awesome! In the change over I found freezer burned foods, some that I was not proud of. Like a few steaks, and a $20. slab of salmon. yes, I know, pretty lame. However I took those items and sliced them very thin and put them on top of the wood stove. I ended up with a ton of salmon which Monty thinks is the food of the gods. I dried them well, double bagged some baggies and put them in the freezer. I have not bought store bought treats since. Today I broke out the freezer burned shrimp, I know, I know, dont judge me, thats why we got an upright so that I can find things! If you have a wood stove, you do not need a dehydrator, although I will warn you when I did the salmon the house was pretty much like a fish house. LOL Tomorrow I will take the other 2 bags of shrimp, chop them up, mix with baby food pureed sweet potato, eggs and flour, I'll report on those later.
Heather, we have lots of dehydrator recipes in The Food Group.
Heather - if you invest in a good dehydrator, there are lots of treats you can make. Sweet potato slices are a favorite here, but you can also do apples and other fruit and veggies. Also liver or chicken.
Daisy is (aparently) allergic to wheat and gluten.
Soooo cookies purchased from a store are quite hard to find that are gluten/grain free. We feed Daisy Natural Balance Duck and Potato and she loves it ... and they have cookies but they are quite expensive. Now she loves veggies so thats what I feed her for a treat (carrots and beans) but does anyone have a recipe or a website that I should visit for a recipe for homemade??
Thanks to all in advance :)
Honey is also a natural preservative and adding a little to any dog treat will help them keep better.
While looking up something different to do with the soon to be leftover turkey I came upon this yummy sounding Turkey/Cranberry Doggie Treat. Thought others might be interested.

They look yummy, Chris. Look through the Treats Pages for more ideas: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/dkcookbook/forum/topics/treats-1 or the Grain Free Treats. Look above for all the pages and topics.
Sorry, I didn't get back to computer to thank you, Tammy and Gracie and Kim and Abby. I have been overwhelmed with busy work and haven't had enuf time. I
truly appreciate the info. I have decided to make homemade treats for my "brat-doodles" as I no longer trust any that are on the shelves.
The ASPCA's website can tell you what spices and foods are toxic to animals. But I do know cinnamon is good for both dogs and humans. It helps to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Some people I know actual sprinkle a little cinammon on their dog's food each morning.
