Ok, so this morning I watched an episode of It's Me or the Dog on Animal Planet which featured a woman in Long Beach and her Labradoodle "Jack." The woman used absolutely no discipline and she let her dog run rampant and walk all over her. In one clip the dog jumped out of a sailboat in the ocean and swam back to shore with her trying to chase it, and in another clip it ran out the front door and right in front of a passing car! It is so frustrating to watch shows like this because these dogs…

So I felt I needed a photo, so I put one up of me, Bruiser and Bailey. I got Bruiser and Baily in September of 1997. Bruiser/Bailey's mother was a purebred Golden Retriever and their dad was a purebred Labrador Retriever.I helped my mom deliver their litter and then spent the next 8 weeks helping to raise them. Then they came home with me and lived happily for the next 11.5 years. They died within 6 weeks of each other from hemangiosarcomas in their right atrium. As siblings, it is not unusual…

Tomorrow it will be three weeks since we made of NJ road trip to bring our Murphy home. In some ways it feels like he's been part of our family for so much longer. He is one of my boys now, and I love him with all my heart. He and Guinness were fast friends, and that bond just continues to grow. They are crazy about each other. Sometimes when I watch them "Doodling around" I just can't help but laugh. They are clowns together. Guinness though has really developed some "older brother" behaviors.…

I posted a discussion in the photography group a while back and asked about how to get Darwin to do more interesting poses. Well, I posted a picture of him sitting and someone told me I should try and get a shot without his leash.
That can be quite difficult because during the daytime where we live, he has to be on leash whenever we are outdoors. (apartment, no yard) Yet if we take him to a dog park, the chance of getting him to sit for a picture is about.. zero percent. The result is…

THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO SUPPORTIVE AND COMPLIMENTARY OF OUR FOSTER FAILURE. I feel so lucky to have so many friends who care.
Adrianne M. started it all by having us be a back up for a doodle in need. This was just after my son's beloved doberman had to be put down. Then I went to the Humane Society's fund raiser where I saw the doodle formerly known as Buck. It was love at first sight. He went to the groomer today and as usual she did a fabulous job.…

Well, the trial is over. My daughter came over tonight and picked up Bailey. The project was a success!. They flat tuckered each other out, too no end. My wife loved it, because Riley didn't antagonize the grandchildren when they where over like normal. My biggest concern is keeping up with them for two weeks in June, when everyone is in Florida. Probably will have to get my sister in law to come over daily to let Bailey out for relief, as Bailey doesn't seem to like the dogie door to outside…

This may be a bit of a ramble but here goes. It does my heart good to see all the beautiful doodles getting new forever homes and great foster moms. That's a lot of happiness being spread around. I know why we love our doodles but is amazing the affect they have on others. I have noticed that when Quincy and I are out walking he makes people smile just by seeing him. When people drive by you can see them point and smile. We are constantly stopped and folks tell Quincy how beautiful he is and…

time to move to Walla Walla? Remember when I offered you a Breeder Relocation Package to help make the move a smooth one?
I promised you I'd start making puppy socializers...and being a woman of my word, I made Natalie! How many more socializers do you need? Tell me. Cuz I'll get to work!
What I'm trying to say is I have horrible puppy fever (again!…

I just read Anne's post about her day with allergy testing for her dood yesterday. We were starting the process for having the same thing done with Nugget. I know that there has been a lot of allergy info posted on DK already (We have benefited from it all....esp the help of Karen and Jack) but I thought our Nugget story may help another doodle and his/her owner.
At 2.5 years old last summer, our ALD, Nugget began scratching....scratching like she really meant it. Up to that point, she…

This has been quite the day. I took Duke to Dayton, OH to MedVet for a check up and to talk to the doctor about the food trial that he has been on for his allergies. Sheba has followed the same diet as she has been scratchy and itchy too. This is how the day went:
During the drive to Dayton there was constant rain, sometimes very hard, lots of road construction around downtown Dayton and I had a killer headache. Due to the construction I was running a little late. I…

Well, my wife is taking all three our three daughters and all our grandchildren to Disney World Florida in June. Leaves me with my one of my daughters pleas of tending to her golden retriever. Not that hot on that scenario!. She brought Bailey over yesterday, as a trial/test of how things will go. At this point, it is a riot. They play so good/hard together, Golden is so good about not crushing the doodle with her paws. They play so hard, that they are panting all the time. I do not exercise…

Yesterday, it was two weeks since I picked up Wilbur in Athens. I can't believe it's just two weeks! He's just not even the same guy he was back then (and I'm not just talking about his smell!)! While I can't claim that he's become a happy, playful doodle, he as DEFINITELY become less wary and his confidence that he will regularly get food, water, attention, and affection has grown by leaps and bounds. He is a very mellow boy who probably won't be playful like Callie (Callie's just super…

Well, we have made it through week 1 on the second hip.....This time around it has been much tougher on Beemer. Although the first hip is healing very well....it has been only 5 weeks....so he struggles to use that one as his good hip while trying to understand why the other hip is not working as well. He spends most of his days sleeping and his appetite has diminished greatly....We sat on the deck with him yesterday as it was so warm....but his x-pen seems to be the place his feels the most…

Rusty is recovering so well that it does not seem possible that it was only eight weeks ago Monday that his leg was amputated. I have not posted for several weeks as we have been getting our lives back in order. Rusty is handling the Chemo Therapy fairly well, some nausea and loss of appetite for a couple of days after his twice monthly treatments; he has four more months of Chemo left.
He has adjusted so quickly to three legs that many of our friends can't believe how normal he is…

Well, it has been about 13 years since I owned a puppy! So this is going to be a fun re-learning experience for me. I have been brushing up on training techniques, including potty training. We recently removed most of the carpet in our house and have restricted the dogs from entering the carpeted area. So I feel like I am going to be calmer about the potty training, since it is just a spray and wipe cleanup. Therefore, I must remain diligent in my potty schedule!!
Countdown to D-day…

I just want to share this. San Marcos is a suburb of San Diego, a man put an owl box in his back yard 2 years ago and an owl just nested in it. He put in a day and a night camera so you can see Molly all the time. The owner of the owl house has been on TV, does classroom visits over Skype as this turned into a real learning experience for him as well as his viewers. If you take a look at the website, during the evening and at night they are more active, but during the day they feed as well and…

I know many who would really like to Foster worry that they will never be able to give up the dog when the time comes, or that they will be too sad when the dog leaves. I know for me, as I've mentioned before, the only sadness that I had was that I knew that Topper had to get used to yet another home. Everyone (my family) had their doubts about my ability to let him go when the time came. I somehow knew that would not be a problem. When he left, the tears everyone expected never came. That…
