As women sometimes do, I was having an emotional morning. Standing in the blustery subzero darkness in my pjs and overstuffed down coat waiting for Gracie to do her biz, tears rolled down my face. Wishing for her to hurry up but oblivious to what she was actually doing, I look down and Gracie was sitting there in front of me lifting her paw and pawing at my leg - as if to say it will be ok, Mom. Kind of like a child will do when they see their mom all flustered and rush to give them a…

Okay, yesterday Ruby got her City of Boulder license tag and her rabies tag. I put them on her collar with her Ruby identification tag. She looks like a Christmas tree. The Rabies tag is bright green and shaped like a bell, her Ruby name tag is red and the Boulder license is silver. We still have to get our City of Boulder Open Space tag...a blue tag. She can reach the city license tag and is chewing on it. They make a racket [she could be in a band]. I know she'll get used to them but…

This is a story about redemption and second chances.
Last week I went home to Indiana and stayed with my niece and her husband. They have a big, black dog named Marshmallow. Marshmallow started out life with my nephew, his wife, and three kids, and when my nephew and his wife got divorced, Marshmallow became one of the casualties. At the time, I agonized over whether or not I could handle three dogs, two of them super-sized, and was so relieved when my niece (Mar’s aunt)…

Today Findlay, my four month old Goldendoodle puppy, went to the groomer for the first time. I took him in there looking like my sweet little mop top and he came home an adorable little man dog/ teddy bear. He looks sooooo different and he is so soft. I wish I could keep him looking this way. I did get a really nice, groomer recommended, brush and comb, so we will see if I can keep him looking this handsome.

This blog doesn’t really have much to do about dogs, except I think of lots of these things while out walking with them. It’s when I do my best thinking and lately, I have been thinking that I’m falling farther behind with all the new technology. Hayley and I went on a road trip this weekend to North Carolina to visit my grandson and everything about the GPS I used got on my nerves. I remember the days when we just used a map and the hardest thing about it was figuring out how to re-fold…

Well, "the best laid plans of mice and men" Judy has had surgery and we cut down the number of foster dogs in our home to make it a bit easier for me to care for the dogs and Judy while she is recuperating. Suddenly this happened...

Judy had foot surgery today and as soon as Holly saw her on the bed at home, Holly hopped up to keep her company. Somehow, Holly knows not to touch the operated foot.
BTW: Judy is doing just fine. They replaced the joint in her big toe due to arthritis. Modern medicine is…

December was an exciting month for us. Last Christmas was the first Christmas our family was split apart for the holidays because of distance, so whatever I say from this point on, just know I wouldn’t have it any other way. At the beginning of December, Megan and Doc arrived home in the middle of the night with Archer and their two French Bulldogs. Megan and Doc have long been night owls and when they visit, it is not uncommon for them to go out around 10 pm and arrive back home long…

Okay, maybe I'll never be a lady--but I'm dog crazy. More specifically, I'm completely smitten with Ruby, 12 weeks old today. I can't take enough photos, my Facebook page is filled with photos of her. I go out in the middle of the night with my down coat over pajamas, hair unbrushed for the…

It has been below zero in Chicago Suburbs and my pup can only be outside about 5 minutes to do her numbers.
my husband found a treadmill training video and we tried it out today. Maddi is pretty nervous around new things so we used chicken to get her on it.
she sat down and laid down when it started moving.
hope we have better luck next time! Any tips?

Every year at this time I get a little sad, but not for reasons most people would think. Sure the holidays are over and I have to put everything away, but that’s not it, although I do hate that job. For a couple of months now, I have spent almost every night going to bed with a Hallmark Christmas movie and now it’s all over. Yes, my name is Laurie and I am addicted to Hallmark Holiday movies. I know some people complain about Christmas coming too soon in stores and on television, but…

I was minding the Salvation Army Christmas kettle at WalMart, passing the time people watching and mentally going over what had been bought, and needed to be bought, for gifts and stocking stuffers when I realized, someone would have to do Mom’s stocking.
Stockings have been a huge part of our Christmas for as long as I can remember, often more treasured than many of the gifts exchanged. Typically they contained everyday toiletries, an excess of candy, a few nifty gadgets…

Since around Thanksgiving Mariner's problems with the seizures have been presenting more difficulties. After about 3 months being seizure free he started to have frequent seizures. This started after giving him the Heartgard Plus and Frontline Plus. We think that the Frontline may be lowering his seizure threshhold. But even as recently as this week he has had a seizure. They are becoming less frequent. We did all the medical workups and although there were some abnormalities right after the…

My darling Holly is seven years old today. I love her more every day. She is a wonderful friend to Judy and I and to our rescue dogs. We have a new rescue Yorkie + Poodle mix, named Sydney, who is terrified of other dogs. Holly will bring her around in a couple of days.
Surprisingly, Sasha, our Jack Russell + Papillion, mix, is also making the little dog feel at home. I had Sydney and Sasha on my lap together for about an hour this morning.…

Some of you who are my friends on FB know that I volunteer for our local animal shelter taking pictures of the dogs.
I have been doing this since April and even though I feel bad for all the wonderful dogs suck at a shelter, I managed to keep my cool. Until early November 6th, when I noticed a small poodle mix was brought to the shelter as a stray. I was there the day after they checked her in, and for some reason I just had to see her. She was in the "found" area waiting for somebody…

I can't remember the last time I was on DK, but I do think of my friends often! Hope everyone is doing well!!
As some of you know, I have a 2 year old girl named Charlotte (human!). I also have Peri, the 5.5 year old goldendoodle, and Taquito, the almost 11 year old Chihuahua with kidney disease.
The past 6 months have been a whirlwind for me. In June I found out we were expecting no. 2! Two weeks later my boss resigned and I have been in a whirlwind ever…

Last Wednesday night we brought Ruby home. She snuggled the whole hour drive. She ate, went outside and settled down into her crate. Whimpered once, took her outside where she did her business.
On Thursday we got a call that my father-in-law, Don, had had a stroke. We went over to Assisted Living--with Ruby in her crate filled with toys. Don's health rapidly declined. We called hospice [angels!]. Then we camped out for the next 4 days at the assisted living center with our new…
