Colleen, what a wonderful picture.  Pecking order for Clancy was established first day by our then alpha dog.  It was hilarious. Clancy walked by Simon and with a look from Simon dropped the toy he was carrying.  This was established with NO animosity, growling etc.  Simon just was boss and we just happened to catch it on camera.

Ned established his superioriority to Clancy by the second day.  Ned had a tooth mark cut on his head but he was boss over Clancy.  We had problems with our Gordie our most submissive dog and Clancy.  They had pecking order issues for about 2 months.  We removed any toy they both coveted.  Now they are fine with each other but there was never any boss established between them. Gordie will still sometimes growl if he has a bone or nylabone and Clancy walks too close by, but the growl means absolutely nothing.

PS I think Colleen's suggestion is a good one and I think that eventually they will work it out--but my point it that no matter what you do, they will establish a pecking order and it is part of their personality--dogs are comfortable with it--more so than we are. Not too many dogs are good about "sharing"--as long as there are no real fights, I would let them establish their pattern but remove the toys for now to get them more accustomed to each other first.

My three all have different personalities when it comes to toys--one doesn't care about them too much and it is a good thing since the other two (Mother and son) take everything away from her within minutes. Luckily, she really doesn't care and would much rather have food than a toy. I make sure there is never any stealing of food and they do not even try to go to each other's food bowls, etc. There is a growl or two over bones but it never escalates since they have a pecking order and they have accepted it. Surprisingly, the male, who is the youngest, has been "the top dog" since the day he was old enough to toddle around (he was born here) and the the other two let him have his way ALL the time. it is a pain sometimes, but it works for them and I really can't change it.

When we were having problems with Cubbie and Ollie getting used to each other, our trainer told us to remove all toys so that they could either play with each other or do nothing at all.  It was hard at first, but we were having actual fights at our house so we gave it a shot and it really helped.  Once we reintroduced the toys, we kept Cubbie's favorite toy (Mr. Pig) hidden so that Ollie wouldn't shred it.  Now that Ollie has learned not to kill all stuffies, Mr. Pig can be out safely with the rest of the toys.

Yogi is very cute.   I am glad things are going smoothly so far.  Just be prepared for some bumps in the road. It will take a few weeks for Yogi to start showing his real personality (he is on company manners now) but I am sure with such a positive beginning, there will be a quick adaption.

We have at least two of most things but not all toys. They both know their own crates but switch beds . They share water bowls but not food bowls. Calla has a too small crate upstairs which she likes to spend part of the night in, coming and going as she pleases. Luca never goes in there.

Colleen, 2 crates or beds is a good idea as well as separate food and water bowls.  I even started buying 2 of each toy now just to avoid problems.  If you do a search in the discussion section above you will find a lot of helpful advice about adding a second dog to the family.  Good luck and I look forward to seeing pictures of the new addition.  :)

Hello Colleen and many congratulations on your new addition. We rescued our second doodle over one year ago, Johnny Boy, and he is the best thing that has ever happened to our household. Our original doodle Frankie Girl, was around two years of age when he came into our lives, and like you, for company it had been daycare and dog parks, never having another dog in her home. I think because she is female, she was not really territorial and the transition was so very smooth. From day one, it was like they were litter mates and, even though they both do their own things at times, they are inseparable and, in fact, when I take them both to dog parks (I no longer have to pay for doggie day care) they stick together constantly, never allowing each other out of of their site, no matter how many dogs they play with. We got Frankie Girl as a puppy, paying an absorbent amount of money for a mixed breed without papers ha ha, but at the time, it seemed worth it. Having never rescued before, I was wary of taking in a grown dog that already had his habits and traits set. How humbled were we, Johnny turned out to be one of the best dogs I have ever owned (and I have owned many) I feel there is not one single day that he does not look into my eyes and say "thank's mum, it was a bad world out there on the streets". Good luck with your new pup and remember, this site will help you every step of the way, with whatever you need....:) xxx

You can also use a small spray bottle set on the stream instead of the spray--one squirt settles my dogs right down and sometimes I just need to pick up the bottle.

I do have the bark collar too--but primarily for summer when they are in the yard barking at whatever goes by--our road is a popular walking/bike riding one.

I like the bark collar because it adjusts to the amount of barking and only gives them a little vibration--like a joy buzzer, if you remember those. My dog yelps a bit, stops barking and sits down.
